Filament Storage Preperation
Summer is fast approaching here in Michigan, USA and with it high humidity so I have already prepared for the safe keeping of my filaments by buying a sealed storage container and rechargeable desiccant beads (Blue to Pink). The storage box hygrometer reads about 12% humidity while the house is at 34%. Just reducing any possibilities of bad printing by buying two gallons of desiccant beads that I can also use elsewhere.
Time to get the motorcycles back on the road! To those of you who ride...have a safe riding season.

amen, just took the covers off mine this week 🙂 safe to say the mk3 will be getting less usage in the next few months 🙂

Our average humidity over a 24 hour period is 85% in the summer/fall.
8+ hours a day, it's between 98% and 99%.
Our "dew point" (the point at which the humidity reaches 100%) never drops below 73f starting mid june!
I've got a tote, that I keep my "high value" filaments in, and however much of my cheap filaments I can keep in it too, with 1gallon of Silica beads.
Just because they are messy, and love getting in my spools, I'm thinking I'm gonna either get my wife to sew bags with draw strings to store them in, or end up having to do it myself. (I hate sewing)

I just put the roll in a Ziploc type bag with some desiccant and leave it behind my PC so the GPU keeps it warm.

I've found that paper coffee filters and twist ties work good enough for home made desiccant packs.

I routinely keep rolls of filament on top of my case, the radiator exhaust is just about the right temp for drying 🙂
Also have thrown saturated dessicant packs on top of my gpu to dry them out (microwave was broken).

Would storing filament in vacuum storage containers be a good idea ?
They're pretty straightforward to use, stick your filament into the bag / tub, attach hoover, vacuum for a few seconds - and you're done.
I wonder if this would offer any advantages over a tub with descant ?

These type (image below) come with a little hand pump, so you don't even have to get the hoover out . . .

would probably work just fine assuming the vacuum holds on those, but you could achieve identical results with good quality ziplocs + desiccant.

The Coffee Filters will not be optimal for that.
But it's a good idea!

The Coffee Filters will not be optimal for that.
But it's a good idea!
The commercial coffee filters are much larger - maybe 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in diameter. If you have a restaurant that brews coffee in large quantities nearby (Denny's not Starbucks), you could always ask the manager if you can buy $2 worth of coffee filters. If you ask nicely I expect it'll cost you much less. 🙂

You could also use some of these.
They work very good for any kind of granulate.
And they have a zipper. 😉

I bought some of these on ebay and they seem to work well. Had one with a slow leak, but the rest have held their seal.

My spools are hanging on my spool system, or on a shelf in a cabinet full of dessicant. The only materials I get concerned about are PETG (90% of my supply) and Ninjaflex. I throw them in the PrintDry for their respective temp/ time before printing, never had any issues.

I just use an old fridge + dessicant.
Why the fridge ? its the cheapest airtight shelf i could get. Of course it is not plugged in.
its easy to acces the Spools and there already shelfs inside to put the filament on and it makes a good place to put the printer on.
