Extruder Clicks (each click stops the filament output)
Hello,
I am having an issue with the extruder. On some prints it makes "clicking" sounds. On each click the filament flow is interrupted. This leads to broken prints. Please see .
I noticed that this only happens if I use the Slic3r Software. If I use the Prusa Control Software it doesn't happen.
Slic3r Prusa Edition
Version 1.41.1-rc+
Printer i3 Mk3
Firmware 3.4.1-1356
Do I need to change some settings? Or is this a well known issue?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!
Riko

Hi Riko,
you don't give us much to go on...
are you using the same settings on Prusa control as Slic3r?
(Yes I know Prusa control has limited settings) but you can't compare different layer heights, different infill settings etc.
are you using the correct Slic3r machine configuration, I sometimes mess up between Mk2 MMUv1 settings and Mk3 settings, because I toggle between the machines... and Mk2 mmu settings work on the MK3 or vice versa....
Are you using the profile with the appropriate nozzle size... Slic3r for Mk3 with 0.6mm nozzle is likly to cause problems on a mk3 with 0.4mm nozzle...
can we see a picture of what you are getting when the problem happens?
regards Joan

Riko:
After doing Joan's suggestions first.
I watched the clip and the clicking is on the retraction of the extruder from what I can see. I cannot tell clearly but have you checked to ensure the two screws on the left side holding the extruder door are not too tight? it looks like the bolt heads on the left side are quite screwed in. If the ends of the screws are protruding out the right side of the extruder flip up door it is too tight. you want it just tight enough otherwise it clicks and causes issues.
There is a you tube video by Prusa called how to improve the quality of your 3D prints on the I3Mk3? About 15 seconds in it shows how to calibrate it. Here .
Also, there is an extruder visualizer thing you can print and it shows what direction the extruder is moving which is helpful to see when noise happens. it is in the blog here: https://www.prusaprinters.org/visualize-extruder-motor-movements/

Re: Extruder Clicks (each click stops the filament output)
I have the same issue. It happens randomly on prints with lots of retractions.
My guess so far is that half-melted filament gets stuck and cooled between the PFTE tubing and the cold part of the heatbreak, then it's locked there.
My PFTE tube is now pushed up and crushed at the top... :p
The screws are tight in the video, I had tried from very lose to very tight but the good video was from the last test.
Re: Extruder Clicks (each click stops the filament output)
To close to the bed maybe?
This very important.
To far away, de first layer does not stick.
To close ,first layer is not good, and possible clicking because nozzle can not extrude enough filament, and then you get clicking sound.
Clogged nozzle, heat up the filament, and pull it out, via software.
Do this 3 times to clear the nozzle.
The try again.
Extrude the filament by hand, and watch that the stream is big enough, and straight.
And try different filament. And test again
Slow the print speed. And test again.

No, I can unload and reload the same filament and it prints fine for 10-180 minutes until it stops feeding in a middle of a print.
(Enough to get several nice small prints.)
First layer calibration is perfect. Extruder calibration has been done as well, E axis was off with 3% originally but extruder width was spot on.
