Do you want your filament sensor to work with any color, even clear?

I added a new option to Skelestruder to enable the Prusa laser filament sensor to correctly detect movement of any color filament: opaque, clear, translucent, glittery, etc. Check it out.

Jltx,

Could you possibly separate out the filament sensor options/changes so that those of us using other extruder designs can try and integrate it. Especially into the stock Prusa design. 🙂

Martin

First,, the answer to your title question is: YES!

However, aside from your mentioning that it's a laser based sensor (direct or indirect), I didn't see any actual details as to which one exactly at the link you provided.

While it doesn't mention it directly after reading assembly instructions it looks like it comes down to sensor chamber design.

If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a nonworking cat.

So, are you saying we use the existing Prusa filament sensor, but that the OP's chamber design allows it to work correctly on all the filament types known to befuddle the MK3? Well, that would certainly be nice. For some reason I thought the OP was also proposing the use of a different sensor, but exactly what it was I could not determine.

No, same exact sensor. New part design. Parts are on the link. I need to update the assembly instructions. Hopefully today.

Yes, I think this can be added to the stock one. I will take a look. But you would lose all the other great benefits of skelestruder. 😀

Looks like the sensor in the new part is at an angle to the filament path (not perpendicular like in stock design). If it works it is a brilliant idea.

Re: Do you want your filament sensor to work with any color, even clear?

Yeh it looks like it is bouncing the laser on the printed part to the filament. When there is filament opaque ones will scatter the light same as the Prusa design however the clever part is it uses the translucent and transparent filaments as a lens to get the scattering that way if I am seeing how it works correctly. So with no filament a lot of light is reflected back to the sensor with filament it is a lot less.

Martin

no, I don't think so from reading spec. It is IR laser, 850nm. There is one extra piece which is a small bearing the acts as uniform surface. Simple! Does require a small FW change too, but dirt simple.

assembly instructions updated so you can see the simplicity.

I just printed a multi-hour print in clear petg that previously would not make it past the intro line or skirt.

So, you added a bearing that the filament rides against, and you moved the sensor to monitor the bearing instead of the filament? Nice idea. It should work well as long as the filament to bearing surface provides enough friction to keep the bearing moving. With the types of filament I use, I haven't run into problems yet, but I'll keep this in mind if I do.

Jltx, I love the new design - brilliant! Can I use these 2 new parts (cartridge and lid) with previous Skelestruder parts (say b1 version) with the v6 hotend or are these (b3) for volcano hotend?

This is completely independent of hotend. Skelestruder is modular so you just swap out the cartridge. This is compatible with b2 and newer versions.

There is a small spring action that keeps contact and there is no other resistance so the bearing spins freely in space. This should not slip at all. Also, the sensor is actually designed to read stainless steel rotating shafts, so this solution should be 100% reliable. Been solid for me.

If you are planning to teardown your extruder to replace with R3, might as well consider skelestruder to get even better performance.

I would totally do this, but I was scared off by the need to modify firmware or hardware for the extruder gear. Maybe one day I'll hop on this; it looks super interesting to me.

I sense an R4/B8 Prusa Extruder in my future.

I'm not sure what you mean about extruder gear. Basic Skelestruder requires no firmware changes. But the new indirect sensor does require a small change, just to be clear.
