Disable Steppers option does not deactivate the Z axis

I have just been trying to find the source of a feint noise from my Mk3 when at idle and realised it was coming from the Z axis steppers.

When I tried to twist the threaded rods, they are stuck, so clearly the motors were engaged.. So i selected the "Disable Steppers" option expecting it to release the motors and nothing happend.

I then energised the X, Y and Z axis, and then used "Disable Steppers" and it works for X & Y, but not Z.

Is this intentional? Or a bug/oversight? How do you deactivate Z if you need too?

Hi Jan,

easiest way to disable Z motors, is power off...

but if you mess about with the Z motors, don't forget to run the Z axis to the top, before using the printer afterwards!

Does the initial calibration eliminate the need to to a "mechanical calibration" at the top of the Z axis?

I am asking because it seems like the left and right Z steppers have a chance to get out of sync every time the machine is powered off. The X and Y motors get run to their end points at the start of every print. Should the Z axis motors get run to the top at every powerup?

Hi Steve,
I don't zap the Z top every print, it's pretty stable, but whilst the printer is warming up, we tend to clean the nozzle and mess about with the printer, which could upset the ballance if the Z motors were not energised...

I only do the top of Z reset X axis lark, if I start having problems.
