Cost to rent a printer?

I'm moving overseas to work away for a year, problem is I have my lovely new Mk3 and it will be collecting dust cause I can;t bring it with me.

Someone brought up the idea of renting it from me for the year for their own use. What do you think would be a reasonable price to rent out a working Mk3 for 13 months?

Re: Cost to rent a printer?

A business will usually buy equipment based on getting full return on value within 3-5 years. A 3D printer is going to potentially get a lot of wear and tear, so you might use 1-2 years. Alternately, you could just look at it as wanting to recoup your money within a year for zero risk (assuming they pay). Divide the cost of the printer by 12, 24 or however many months you think is fair and there's your monthly rate. You might deduct a couple of months from the initial value if you've used it heavily (it's used after all), then divide.

If it's a friend, I'd cost up "consumables" and add in a couple of beers.

That's basically the nozzle and possibly bearings if they're running it 24/7. Nothing else should die within the year, but "you break it, you bought it" should apply.

If it's not a mate, I wouldn't bother. It'll break, they'll blame you/the printer, you will end up out of pocket.

I agree with Stuart. I would only consider "loaning" it out to a good friend. I would expect them to return it with more filament than you gave to them. A few beers is a bonus.

You’re going away for a YEAR!? Sell him the thing, and buy a MK4 or whatever’s new when you get back.

I suppose you could sell it and let them pay in installments if cash is an issue.
