Better prime line (plea to Prusa)

Since "day one" I have changed the intro/prime line in the start gcode so that it starts 5 mm above the print surface. This way the line will have a "tail" making it very easy - or at least easier - to remove from the build plate.

Specifically, I suggest Prusa changes the following start gcode lines in the Slic3r PE profile:

G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G92 E0.0
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E12.5 F1000.0 ; intro line

To:

G1 Y-3.0 Z5 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G92 E0.0
G1 X60.0 Z0.2 E9.0 F1000 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E12.5 F1000 ; intro line

(Z parameter added to the first and third line)

Now, that Slic3r PE edition automatically updates the printer profiles, it would be great if Prusa could do this change to the start gcode (so that I don't have to after each update 😉 ).

Anyone see any issues with the change?

Best regards

Interesting approach with the prime line, but it might be easier to just put a bit of glue stick or a smear of the finger across the area where the line prints. That will help with the end of the line where it can also be difficult to remove. I usually rub mine [EDIT: my PEI sheet] before each print.

Joans idea of using forehead sweat actually works very well. But even with it my stickered sheet is still starting to show some damage at the very end of the purge line after a bunch of use.

I have been so tempted to have "bang forehead here" emblazoned on a print bed. I've mentioned Joan's technique in other forums, but get disbelief when I refer to the "forehead" technique. It does work quite well though! My mitts alone are usually sufficient to keep PLA from sticking.

Yeah PLA is a non issue really, but PETG sticks like its super glued on.

Heh, yeah. I was doing great with the "bang forehead" method until I tried 3DXTech PETG at 260C. Yikes!

With PETG I made good experiences removing the print and priming line when the heatbed is still quote warm, somewhere on the middle between printig. Temps and cold.

Re: Better prime line (plea to Prusa)

I saw a post a few weeks back where someome used the time to generate a random number which was then move the prime line around so it didnt always print in the same spot.

I planned to try it at some point but will have to find the post first.. i will have a look for it tomorrow, but if tou seatch you might find it.

Edit: i think this was it

That's it. Please see my observations about randomly placing it (a couple/few posts down...)

Are you saying that randomly placing the purge line could be the cause of some of your problems?

I've always put a line of blue tape along the edge. Keeps the whole area clean and makes it super easy to remove PETG priming lines. I've also extended my prime line about 50mm.

Do you put the blue tape on both sides? Does this affect the mesh levellling?

How do you extend the prime line??

Re: Better prime line (plea to Prusa)

No, I just hang it over the edge. It's easy to remove, and if you are flipping the plate over you can just take it off one side … and put it on the other.

Edit: No, it doesn't affect the mesh levelling.

At the end of your start g-code in slic3r printer settings, change the line so the X is higher. I think originally it is at X100? It means move along X axis 100mm. I changed mine to X150.0, it gives it a longer priming line and purges a bit more of the nozzle.

Mine looks like this, although on looking at it now I don't think its right so don't just copy it.

G1 X150.0 E12.5 F1000.0 ; intro line

First, I haven't had any problems with the purge line.

The relevant portion is:
Just some observations....
....
Randomly positioning [the purge] line--what if it winds up right where the print is going?

May I suggest, as an alternative, having the line print relative to the printed object, regardless of size or position [of the printed object]. E.g. have the line print a few millimeters in front--and to the left--of the main (or front/left-most) object.

Direction and distance from the object are optional; front & left is just a convenient location. Placing the purge line relative to the print would ensure the relocated purge line wouldn't wind up as part of the first layer.

So you are printing the purge line in a different position each time, based on the object you are prinitng?

Any chance you could post your start gcode?

Again, I'M not experiencing any problems, so I have no gcode.

I was commenting on the suggestion to randomly relocate the purge line every time, and offering and alternative way of relocating it.

If no-one here has any specific g code to accomplish this, you can fine many tutorials via google.

I am confused.. I thought it was you who came up with the "random" purge line?

Are you still using this? If so, is it the same GCODE as in the above thread?

Apparently.

No. I'm guessing English is not your first language. That may be the route of your confusion.
Please read that entire thread again... carefully. 😉

Wow.. Such arrogance... I can assure you, as a born and bread Brit, English is my first and only language.

I give up... You are just talking in riddles and I get the feeling you are doing it deliberately .. I have clearly missed something, but I am not even sure which post you want me to go back to read. Go and read "that" thread? What thread? What does "that" mean? We have referred to several in this thread alone..

Every post from you seems to refer to something else you said, without giving a link. And just seems to contentious with your use of bold and capitals... I was the one who posted and gave you credit for your 'random purge' concepts, but I am no longer even sure its even worth pursing this, as I have come up with (and followed many other) solutions which are working just fine.

Is it not too much trouble for you to actually explain what you are talking about? A copy/paste of a link might work... But don't do it for me.. I am done with this.

OK, first, there's difference between a post and a thread. A post is a single message, while a thread is the collection of all posts of a particular subject or discussion.

Going back through your posts in this thread, you've only referred/linked to one thread... twice.
That's the only thread I've been referring to--the one you posted:
https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/general-discussion-announcements-and-releases-f61/better-prime-line-plea-to-prusa--t24540.html

If you review the entire thread, (or just the OP) it should be clear who first suggested randomly moving the purge line--the OP.

I'm sorry you feel I was being arrogant. There are many people on this forum for whom English IS a second language, and IME, when there is confusion, that is very often the reason. From my POV, it was not an unreasonable guess--and that's all it was--a guess. Thank you for clarifying.

'Nuff said.

That's "MISTER Old Fart" to you!
