3D print cleanup

Hello all, I am close to dipping into 3D printing and the MK3s seems to be a good choice.

I am just curious about the quality of the prints and how much cleaning up there might be? I think I will mostly be using Nylon..

I can't speak for nylon, but in general, it depends on the model you are printing.

Some prints are ready to go right off of the print bed.

Others require some filing, maybe even some sanding or a hobby knife to take off 'zits', maybe some 'chasing out' of holes.

Items with supports obviously need the supports to be removed, which can be trivially easy or frustratingly challenging, depending on circumstances.

Some people smooth their prints in acetone (ABS) and some will lacquer or paint them.

@jsw

I have seen quite a few demo prints, that are stunning, but there is no mentioning of any cleaning. I knew it  would be too good to be true. Thanks for the feedback 😊

Orientation can have a HUGE effect on the adhesion and surface quality of models on supports

this model

Printed beautifully and parted from the supports with negligible effort and negligible cleanup, other orientations would have been much more difficult

Hmm, I see.. orientating it like this you will not have to support the holes (lying on the back) nor internal between the two "legs".

Orientating it like this how can one expect the surface without support.. will there be visual lines from the layers requiring sanding or other kind of cleanup?

Thanks for the feedback 😊

Hi Tj,

the support was only under the model  (I used Support enforcers)

None of the holes needed support,
the model will have layer lines just like any other 3D FDM Print. but the 45degree sides will not droop onto support, so the surface quality will be better than a  horizontal  surface over supports
