Z calibration 4 points fails with carriage at top of Z axis. Pinda? Sticking axis?

Hi there,

New printer build from kit - during the initial calibration process "12 minute" one, successfully XYZ home, the carriage moves up and does its final Z home, then the prompt to clean nozzle/ piece of paper comes up, I cycle forward, no steel bed on, yes, start -> then the printer tries to move down, gets approx 5mm then halts and throws an error.

"Calibration failed Check the axes and run again"

Any ideas? It does feel like there's a tiny bit of resistance about 15mm from top of Z travel but I dont think that would trip the pinda, which is what's supposed to be actively looking for the front left magnet in the bed bed during this step. I've replugged both Z axis, checked the conical bump stops are not too tight, and loosened and realligned the Z braces at the top of the frame.

The printer doesn’t use physical endstops, the drivers use motor current monitoring. If the current climbs too high it assumes it’s hit the end of travel. It happens really fast in software and works great. Usually. However anything which causes an increase in current will trigger it.  That’s why axis travel has to be smooth in all axis, in both Directions and for the full length.

The Pinda isn’t involved until it gets near metal and is just used to set the offset from the metal sheet once in range , or the scanning points when calibrating.

Did you clean and repack the bearings during assembly?  Lets hope yes.....if not, maybe start there.  I would do a full factory reset first to be safe no matter what, then inspect the x axis - make sure its fully pressed together and there is no broken/torn plastic on the trapezoid nuts.  There isn't a lot there that can cause physical resistance, it should be easy to narrow it down...especially if the error occurs around the same area while moving on direction.

Is your printer grinding? Bearings squeaking? Motors smoking?
Step 1) Wash your Steel Sheet
Step 2) Return to Step 1

I pulled apart both sides of the Z carriage and replaced the trapezoid nuts, no luck. Cant see anything physically interfering.

@neophyl

On my newly built s model, i cannot get past.xy check. Sometimes it gets farther and more steps than others. Can i jump over this step? I odered a smaller pully cause a post on here said it might need 16 nt 20 teeth
