Y-Rod Holders Cracked/Broken During Assembly

The instruction just say to tighten down the holders and I assumed they would completely close. Did I do something wrong? What now?

Yes, you tightened the screw too much (obviously). Gap has nothing to do with that -you should tighten just enough to prevent rods to move. But I'm sure you realized that by now.
What to do... You can try to fix the holder with glue and then really gently tighten the screw. Idea is, to make printer working, so you can print new holder. Original part is printed with PETG, but if you only have PLA, it will do the job too (until you get PETG).
If gluing attempt fails, then you can only purchase new holder at Prusa shop, or try to find someone with 3D printer to make it for you.

Thank you. I think it will hold until I print another.

BTW I notice I am not the only one to encounter this problem. This is probably something that should be addressed in the docs or in the design of the clamp.

Who would you like to do that for you?

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic 🙂 but obviously it's too late for me. I have chatted to Prusa support about this and pointed them to this thread. I assume only they can update their docs or their designs.

I'm still in the process of assembly, my first for any 3D printer. My observation so far is that there are multiple potential problem areas that have not made it into the docs, some of which have been reported in the docs comments more than a year ago. The comments are a great resource for anyone who is blocked on a task, but in cases like this thread they don't help much. If this were my company I'd go thru all the docs comments and be sure to update the docs to cover any issues that could result in damage. I'm disappointed that this has not been done because everything I'd learned about Prusa before buying a printer kit suggested they were on top of this.

If you can let us know where you are, there may be someone nearby who can print you replacement(s).

@mad-pup

If you take a look at the Prusaworld pages, you may find someone in your area who would print a replacement part for you.

Good luck!
