Y crash without nothing to crash
Hey! I’ve been recentely having problems while printing ASA in my enclosure. When the bed is in the middle, it gives the error and recalibrates again. It happens in the middle of the print normally, but last time it gave one next to another just at the very first layer so very rare. When I print PLA or petg it doesn’t seem to happen.
Y belt tension is 278.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Could you video you moving the bed back and forth so we can hear if it sounds right

Hi;
Ive had it that my y motor was getting quite hot , so I added a fan to cool it and this prevented my phantom y crashes, however i I think I will need to replace the y motor soon 🙁
Interesting a friend of mine also had phantom crashes on the Y axis , but he recently did a nozzle swop and did not realized that he did not tighten the nozzle correctly, thus the nozzle was slightly loose and was leaking as well, which caused the Y crashes as well.

Hmmm, interesting, could be the motor getting to hot, because the temperature of the enclosure today got to 37°C + 2h and a half of the motor working. Also when it gave the error in the first layer the motor had just finished the previous model. Then I let the enclosure to cool a little bit and put the print one hour later, then only got 2 y crashes. Wouldn’t the fan create a draft that could be not very good for asa? If anyone has any idea how to implement a fan that would be great!
about the nozzle, recently, about 2 months ago I changed to a tungsten carbide nozzle and got leaks but got also a copper plated and leaks finished, since then I’ve been printing flawlessly.
For me it sounds more like it’s the motor getting to hot, I’ll se if a can get a little fan and put it on the side. Sorry for this question but does the fan do anything with the enclosure temperature at let’s say 37°C, cause it moves hot air?

The motors can get too hot to touch without damage. Belts running off-centre can damage bearings 'though.
Check your idler bearing, is it clogged, off centre, or failing (with the belt loose try turning with your fingertip - is it smooth?)
With the belt off try turning the motor by hand, you should feel the steps but no grating and no varying pressure.

Soo, i get the belt off and then I move the motor, an the idle bearing is the one in the front let’s say no?

You're checking both ends of the belt - it'll make a very boring video.

Stepper motors can run very hot I would not of thought that would cause it

Could it be that the print is detaching a little bit and touching the nozzle, I tried rising z and applying glue and it persisted. But who knows 😅

Unlikely so I thought if u turn on stealth mode to limit the frequency of the motor that could fix false reading so try turn on stealth mode and do a print if it works good then it could be a motor starting to die but should be OK for a bit

Okey, I’ll try that last advise as it’s the easiest, if with slate mode doesn’t do that, why would the motor break? This prusa was bought on march so it should be like new, or maybe is a factory defect. But what doesn’t make sense to me is that while printing PLA or petg it doesn’t seem to happen

I would say the best is get on a call with Prusa Support, worst comes to worst they send you a new motor as its still under warranty if you got it in March

For reference I started the print in normal mode and within an hour I got 2 crashes. I’ve found some other threads and they mention the motor may have a factory defect. So as it’s under warranty tomorrow I’ll contact prusa support. I keep you updated.

Just as a side note , when stealth mode is switched on then crash detection is by default disabled, the same way you can switch it off under the settings menu, and your prints will probabbly be just fine, except if you start to see some layer shifting.

I contacted support and came out I had my belts too loose, so far no new y crashes.
Guys be sure to check that silly things first 😅😅 thanks all four your help 🫶
also I saw another thread and all my symptoms were for a broken motor, so if any of you are having the same problems and you have checked the belt contact support 😉

Out of curiosity how did they assist you to determine the belts where to loose and what steps did they take you through to remedy this ?

First of all they asked me to check the belts tension, seemed correct, around 275-280, then to check if there was any loose bolt (I also had problems when assembling my machine with not tightening correctly the grub screws to the motors, while doing that I noticed that the belt was touching the frame. So I tightened it, and also found out that one screw of the belt tenioner wasn’t either loose or properly tightened. The belt now was much much more tight but in the machine the numbers haven’t changed that much 265~. So the machine numbers aren’t very reliable I think, I tried in my own with prusa’s new belt tuner, with that they still seem to be a bit loose but doesn’t matter. When I finished with that I also saw that the x belt was a lot more loose and touching the plastic part, and tightened it as well, and for the moment no more phantom crashes. Soo after all a happy ending. The moral on this? If you buy a new printer be sure to retighten and do a little check of the overall machine after some totals days of use. For mine they were 23 use days 😅😅.
