Y-Axis Shifting During First Layer

I have had my printer for a month. It was printing fine. Now it has a sloppy y-axis. It shift during the layer not just between.

I hear a thump but I can't identify where it's coming from when it shifts.

I have:

  • checked the belt tensions

  • checked the drive pulley screws, they are on the flat of the motor and tight. I can hold the motor shaft with pliers and have quit a bit of resistance to get the belt to skip

  • checked that the bed moves freely

  • checked that the idler pulley seems to rotating freely.

  • I have increased the belt tension just to rule that out

  • updating the firmware, just in case, didn't actually expect it to help
  • I'm at a loss at where to look next. Please let me know what you want to see and if you have any ideas on what I can check to try and solve this.

Belt tension and / or gear slippage.

Tighten the belt drive gear on the motor shaft FLAT FIRST, then the second set screw to lock the part in place. If set screws are tightened in the wrong order they will come loose.

If the belt skips - even with strong force, the belt is too loose.

It look like my drive pulley is shifting during prints even though everything is tightened down on it. I think when I first installed it was slightly to the side of the flat part of the motor axle.

In addition to the previous tip´s there is a small chance that your u-bolts hit the frame.
There is not much space between the rods and the u-bolts.
Make sure that your frame screws are all tight and take a look at your rod holders.
Maybe a nylon strap came loose.

Thank you for the suggestions I did check all of the u-bolts and replaced the zip ties. I didn't notice the smooth rods shifting at all during failed prints.

Let us know if things improve after adjusting the pulley.

I can't get it to hold, I've ordered a new gear.

If you place the first set screw on the shaft FLAT, and tighten it up; then tighten the jam set screw, the gear really can't move. The trick is to ensure the first screw is square to the shaft flat. Rocking the gear as you tighten the set screw can help you feel when it is "right" and the screw aligns with the shaft. The order of FLAT FIRST is crucial. If the jam screw is even remotely tight first it'll mess things up.

Though, if the head of either set screw has stripped, then you'll have problems. With the new gears, make sure the Allen wrench is aligned and firmly seated into the set screw before tightening. They don't need a lot of force, snug the first on the flat, then when you snug the second it locks the system.
