Y Axis does not glide smoothly

IMG_0390

Hi everyone!

Started building my new printer today, and I’ve just finished the Y axis assembly chapter. While I am gliding the bed back-and-forth, there is a grading noise when pushing it forward, and a janky, stuttering, jerky feeling when pulling it back.  Hopefully in the above video, you can see and hear what I mean by this.

Is this expected? Is it just resistance from the motor that I’m feeling?

RE: Y Axis does not glide smoothly

If you’re unsure, disconnect the belt or unscrew the motor from the frame to release the belt and slide it again to see how it feels.

Loosen the screws holding down the smooth rods and run it back and forth by hand to see if the resistance evens out. Sometimes a slightly misaligned rod can do this. If this helps, slide the bed all the way to one end and tighten the rods at the same end. Slide it to the other end, being careful to check it still slides easily and tighten the rods at that end. If it’s still off, loosen one end of one rod and gently tap it left or right a smidge. Tighten and try again. If it’s worse, loosen and tap in the opposite direction. This is trial and error but eventually it will sort out.

Did you lubricate the bearings before assembly? Lots of threads and controversy here re to lube or not to lube and best methods and lubricants. Do a search and decide how to proceed. Best to do it now before you get too far along.

Come back and tell us your progress. Many folks here who can help.

Cheers

Sorry for the late reply.  I was able to figure out the problem:  The pully on the Y motor shaft was directly against the Y motor body, and didn't have a space between it and the pully.  After adjusting for a small space, it is smooth gliding!

Good on you, I should have thought to mention that. Glad you got it sorted. Enjoy your printer!
