XYZ Calibration Issue

Hi All,

I could do with a little help if thats ok?

Newly built MK3S+

I have been going through the calibration wizard and its not gone smoothly 🙁

I have gone to the XYZ calibration and it fails.

Finds Home - OK

Y axis goes to the top (except it doesn't - more later)

Y axis come down (a sheet of paper in place), looks for point 1 and fails (nozzle doesn't touch the bed).

I believe this failure is probably because the Y axis stops before it gets to the top (about 3/4 inch of thread remains) - because the LH stepper motor binds up.  There is good clearance all around - nothing is stopping it from going up further.

So I slackened off the top brackets - same isue

Removed top bracket - same issue

Removed the smooth rod - same issue.

The RH thread keeps driving, but the LH stalls out - and can't be turned by hand.

Is it likey this is my problem?  Any thoughts how to resolve it?

I "manipulated" it to start a few mm from the top of Y, it went up, stopped and has started working.

If the extruder is on the RH side of the X axis - it can get to the top of Y.  If the extruder is on the LH side it can't.

Its chuntering its way through the calibrations now - but its obviously an issue that needs to be worked out

Hi, I think you mean Z (up and down)  - Y is front to back.  X is left to right.  Sounds like something was/is jamming one of the screws - did you lubricate the linear bearings before you put then in the orange "X axis assembly" (that assembly holds the X rods and the Z bearings and trapezoidal nuts.  Is the trapezoidal nut on the side that is stiff seated correctly?  There are some reports of that being a tight fit, so if it is a little bit crooked it may be binding.

Now to your calibration patch.  Looks like Z is still too high to me.  It should not have obvious bumps between the lines.

I had Y engrained at school as the vertical "Y for tge sky" - but you are correct.

It still jams when the smooth rod is removed - so won't be the bearings.

I can't work out what it is, but with it only being an issue with the extruder head being on the left, I am wondering if its something to do with a slightly out of tolerance print on that end of the X axis

Verify both motors are engaged and running. You can swap the cables at the Einsy as one test. Also, verify the cone dust caps aren't in contact with the motors. And last: did you have ANY issue starting the threaded rods into the T-nuts? They should spin on easily and freely. If you tried to place the carriage onto the threaded rods AFTER the T-nuts were bolted to the X carriage ends, there's a good chance they were damaged during installation: and a damaged T-nut can cause what you are experiencing.

 

As for the layer one patch: it looks like a good starting point for a more complete, larger test patch.

None of the above issues, but after a little use its working properly now with zero further intervention 🙂

As time passes, watch for other problems in vertical travel. If odd things start up again - just replace the them. Damaged T-nuts will do exactly what you are experiencing (i.e., intermittent issues).
