XYZ Calibration failed refer to manual

Hi.
I got a i3 mk3s kit, finished assembly yesterday, ran the wizard and everything was fine. wanted to print the frog, nozzle clogged.
had to clean the PTFE tube, so i followed the instructions on taking it apart and putting it back together.

wanted to recalibrate it after that, now it keeps failing.
self test is all OK
XYZ calibration:
during the first round with the 4 calibration points, the PINDA probe LED changes color and it seems like it gets all the points... however after point 4 it says "XYZ Calibration failed, refer to manual"

things i tried so far:
-adjusting the height of the PINDA probe (multiple times)
-checked if probe works at all. With a piece of metal, and by manually moving it across the headbed. worked fine
-took the extruder apart again and put it back together, just in case
-factory setting reset.
-and endless numbers of attempts of getting a good calibration.

any ideas, suggestions or even solutions?

When that message pops up, it usually means that the points are really far from where they should be if the printer is assembled correctly.  Look on page 20 of the 3D printing handbook.

after the first assembly it passed the test without problems, didnt change anything except taking out and cleaning the hotend and putting it back in.

followed the website for the disassembly and assembly of the hotend parts.

i tried adjusting the PINDA probe to get better results, no change in the result.
but it finds the points. dont know what else it finds that it comes up with that error msg (i even checked that no metal parts, allen keys or other stuff is somehow stuck on the under side of the magnetic heatbed.

Maybe you can find here an inspiration: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/3tSXh6nWJd-pinda-probe-testing

Just for grins - check your bearings.

Power the printer off and move the extruder both directions to the end. It should be equally smooth both directions.

If you feel any binding - that will break calibration.

@karl-herbert: been through everything except the G80 commands...

tried that. so now i have the choice... either its "Probe didnt trigger" in the front row, middle, or if i set it one tiny bit lower its middle row first point "probe triggered too high"

any suggestions? checked the screws of the headbed, all propperly set. when its triggering too high its hovering right on top of one of the bearings, but its supposed to be there... so no idea how i could mitigate

There is also a possibility that the PINDA is defective. I would contact Prusa via chat. You must be logged in and visit the eshop. A chat window opens in the bottom right. Disable addblocker in your browser.

thx for the tip. will do that tomorrow. dont feel like troubleshooting anymore.

i unscrewed the heatbed, and put it back together (according to the manual) did a Z leveling by hand and had the pinda set up with the zip tie technique again, and the nozzle actually hit the heatbed on spot 2.

so readjusting the pinda to a lower setting, and we went back to the point where the first one in the second row triggered too high.

out of ideas. and if the chat support cant help me tomorrow i will have to send it back... that would su*k big time. i was happy when i finally got it....

Any insights you can share that helped solve it would help the next guy with the same problem.

I hate shipping folks off to Support unless there is a real reason to.

Would you please share the solution as valuable information for all of us?

Thanks!

RE: XYZ Calibration failed refer to manual

sure, sorry. i thought that was somewhere up there. but i will sum it up and put it in a nutshell as good as i can.

just to summerize the problem:
Error msg: XYZ CALIBRATION FAILED READ THE MANUAL. translated it means that the printer thinks the four calibration points are well outside limits. it passed the calibration before so i was rather confident that i didnt screw up the general assembly.

what i tried before the chat support:
disassembling the printer head, removing and reinstalling the heater, PINDA Probe and checking all motors, belts, zip ties, cables. even unscrewed the heatbed and reinstalling it in case there was some tension somehow screwing up the PINDA calibration.
i tried setting the PINDA to different hights only resulting in the problems described above while using the "bed leveling" wiht G80 command. (either crashing in the 3rd point (front row middle point) or pinda triggering too high 2 points later.

i told as much to the chat support. he said to lower the Pinda. at least co-height if not even lower and make a video.
did that and i dont know how but it passed the calibration. obviously thats not how you want the PINDA to be installed. so i put it back to the original setting using the zip tie method.
and it passed again.

the only thing that changed was that i did NOT use a piece of paper to protect the heatbed. during the first run  i was 100% sure the nozzle wouldn't crash into the bed because the PINDA was even lower.
during the second run i was gambling a bit but closely monitoring it.

so if you trust your tinkering skills during the set up and you have a close eye on the nozzle you might want to try calibrating it without the paper when the first test failed.

but i am not sure if that was the reason since i used a piece of paper the very first time when it passed.

sorry for all that "maybe" "could be" bla bla, but there was nothing else i made differently.

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes the MK3 really seems to have something mystical.... 😋

but on the bright side:
I am a pro in assembling and disassembling the printer head now 😀

Just had the same issue.

Solution turned out to be rather simple, tighten the screw which touches the endstop (mk2.5s). making tolerances smaller.
