XYZ Calibration Failed—Please consult manual

Hi Everyone,

I just built my MK3S, powered it up, calibrated and everything. The machine told me my axes were perpendicular. I began printing and the quality was a bit off, so i decided to recalibrate. Now I cannot get past the first round of Z axis calibration. It fails after the fourth spot every time and tells me to check the manual. I've adjusted and readjusted my PINDA probe dozens of times. I've tested my PINDA probe with a piece of metal and it is working fine. Everything is plugged in properly, the belts are tensioned nicely (I've been printing for years, but I am new to Prusa), and the probe appears to be finding the spots just fine. If anyone knows what could be going on that would be a huge help!

Thank you!

Tommy

Check your bearings. Any binding there will throw off calibration.

Power off and move full distance in X and Y, both directions.

You should not feel any binding at all. It has to be smooth.

And you did lubricate your bearings when you built it, right?

Hey Robert.

Right when I posted it I found the issue. The gear on my X-axis stepper was not screwed on as tightly as it needed to be. Thank you for your helpful and quick reply!

If you just tightened that grub screw - it will come loose again.

Loosen both screws, line up one with the flat and fully tighten it. Now tighten the other one.

Sometimes what you do and the order you do it in matter. This is one of those times.

I had the same issue... I don't know if the screw came loose or between page 11 (where they tell you not to tighten them yet) and page 43 where they finally do) I simply blew past that ONE LINE INSTRUCTION to "tighten both screws on the pulley".  That needs to be in bold and twice the size font.  Those loose screws... man.  Three days of painful trouble shooting.  TIGHTEN the X-Axis pulley screws!
