Rattling steel ball in filament sensor MK3S

Hello all. This is a pretty minor complaint, but the steel ball in the filament sensor rattles while printing. It's probably the loudest sound coming from the printer - does anyone have an idea to fix this? I was considering maybe putting some oil in there?

If assembled properly, the ball is under magnetic tension and has no room to rattle.  Did you forget to install the magnets?

The magnets are definitely in there. I don't think the filament sensor would work properly otherwise. It works perfectly when changing filaments.

Someone here compared the magnetic force vs the calculated inertia of the steel ball during rapid print head motions. Their conclusion was the magnetic force was not quite enough to prevent rattling during rapid accelerations.

I got rid of the steel ball and put the magnet right next to my ferromagnetic bearing in my extruder re-design. No rattling during infills. 🙂

Sorry to bump this old thread, but were you able to fix it? I build my MK3s yesterday and started printing today. I didn't hear it with the Benchy, but on my second print I heard a rattle from the extruder during fast X-axis movements. I think it's the ball that has a little bit of play and moved around.

I will check the extruder screws after my print is complete to make sure nothing loosed up.
