Prusa i3 MK3S+ Kit - XYZ calibration failed. Please consult the manual.

Hello,

i3 MK3S+ Kit built; self test is All Correct.

Proceed to XYZ Calibration and it fails nearly immediately.

"Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again."

SuperPinda sensor adjusted dozens of times exactly to section 9 with using a zip tie.

Firmare version is 3.9.2-3524

Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Prusa i3 MK3S+ Kit - XYZ calibration failed. Please consult the manual.

the most common cause of failure is the zip tie nuts hitting the main frame on the back of the X carriage where the cable bundle is fastened to the cable support,

next most common, is, incorrect routing of the fan, extruder motor, or pinda wires as they pass from the front of the x carriage, to the back.

next most common, is poor lubrication of the linear bearings. and Yes I do know what the assembly guide says.

then we can have over tight belts,
over tight Belt idler retaining screws  (it's a bit early for a collapsed Idler bearing but it's still a possibility)
poorly fitting  x axis rear cover  or X axis carriage holding the lineal bearings on the top rod, out of line
this may be resolved by loosening the screws on the back of the X axis a little.

Can you please share some pictures looking at the rear of the X axis carriage, from the left and right? and maybe a picture from the front of the printer showing the whole printer?

Perhaps a short video of the test as it fails, may help as well,

Kind regards Joan

  • Zip tie nuts don't appear to be hitting
  • The wiring from front to back appears to be in the channel. I removed the back x carriage and don't see an issue but can share another video if needed.
  • Are the linear bearings the two on the top rod and one on the bottom? These seem to slide on the rod okay
  • I did a belt test and got the following:
    • X: 242
    • Y:273

More help please!

In the video, the printer was already in the home position when you tried XYZ calibration,

what happens if you move the Y platform forward and the X carriage Right (By Hand) , and try XYZ calibration?

Dear bb,

I had a very similar problem (based on your video). I would recommend you to double check the Z-axis. The Xaxis base (i.e. the whole assembly: motor, idler, carriage) can be slightly off (not aligned in horizontal plane) and it can fail to go all the way up. From some unknown reason, it seems that self test of the Z axis can fail to recognize it (my experience).

possible solution A: 1. get the X-axis base all the way up (manually, until you hit the top part). 2. Then lower it back for 2-3turns. 3. run the selftest and XYZ test again.

possible solution B: As joantabb said, check the zip ties on top of the cable bundle that is going from the extruder part. Based on your pictures, heads of three upper zip ties can block full movement in z-axis (it is possible that they are hitting the upper part of the frame).

Good luck, have a nice 2021 🙂

I can’t be certain without going to check on mine, but I’m sure when I do the Z calibration on mine that the lock buys touch the top Z bracket... on your video neither side seem to hit. Is something getting in the way?
