Problems with layers after upgrade

Hello,

I recently upgraded from MK3 to the MK3S and I am now having issues with my 1st layers and beyond. It seems to do a few lines fine then messes up 1 or 2 lines and continues this pattern. After the upgrade, I calibrated the printer and printed off something without any issues and it looked great. The next thing I printed I started noticing issues with the 1st layers and beyond.

I tried reslicing/using different items and default settings with not help. I tried different filaments and cleaned everything. I played a lot with the live z which did not help. The only thing that slightly helped was a factory reset and calibrate which helped some of the first layer issues in certain areas but they still persist. I have not seen my printer do this before and I am thinking I might take apart the extruder and reassemble, but would rather not if I can help it.

I have attached a picture of the first layer and second layers.

2nd layer

Any advice is appreciated.

It's always hard to judge pictures, but my 1st impression is that your Live-Z adjustment is way too close. The uneven layer 1 issues are due to the filament being mashed into the bed. Are you hearing extruder clicks? Is the 1st layer hard to peel off?

If you haven't already done so, I'd urge you to re-calibrate your Live-Z using Jeff Jordan's excellent "Life Adjust" procedure. It is much easier to use and understand than the on-board Prusa Live-Z adjustment routine.

If the Live-Z adjustment is correct, it could be an extrusion problem. If you raise Z and extrude filament, does it flow straight down and form a neat coil, or veer off to one side? You might try doing some cold pulls if this is the case.

Re: Problems with layers after upgrade

Hi John,

I also upgraded from MK3 to MK3S two days ago and were faced with same problems you have. After making over 30 live-Z adjustments I almost got crazy but finally it seems to work now after having done following things:

- Recalibration of the PINDA sonde as described in chapter 5. Preflight check (my PINDA sonde seemed to be too high)
- Adjust live-Z has changed after my upgrade from around 0.900 to 1.275

Good luck
Ben

Thanks all for the suggestions. I tried the live Z adjustment a bunch more times with no luck. I finally decided to open it up and noticed the ptfe tube was being grinded down by the gears in the extruder. I did swap out the right one with the upgrade but not sure why it happened as I followed the directions exactly. Anyway I opened it up and cut the tube a little more and cleaned the gears. It seems to have fixed the issue for me. Thanks all.
