Post-build first time calibrate failing

I had the pinda adjusted exactly 1 zip tie thickness higher than the nozzle and that failed, then I tried lowering it slightly more than that and it failed again.  After it does the X and Y homing it confirms the steel sheet is not present and says to put a sheet of paper down (I do).  Then it immediately lowers to the bed and fails.  The description in the handbook makes it sound like Z axis calibration will start by going all the way *up* first, but mine doesn't do that.

What am I missing here?

RE: Post-build first time calibrate failing

I upgraded the firmware to the latest version (I believe mine had 3.10.1 on it, it was something from 2021 I recall) and now the calibration seems to be underway (claiming it will take 24 minutes versus 12 minutes the original one promised).  Is this a known issue?  I'm always torn on doing firmware upgrades on new devices because sometimes the latest can introduce an issue.  Even on PC motherboards the manufacturer often says "we only recommend upgrading if you are experiencing an issue."  But if the older firmware couldn't even get past the calibration stage that seems like a pretty big show stopper 🙂
