Pinda sensing distance

Hi there,

i finished my MK3s build last week but some things aren’t working 100% as expected.

one of the things is the PINDA. After the first calibration failed I had to lower it much lower than the recommended „wire strap distance“. It’s now 0.5 mm above the nozzle tip.

To get a squish .2 mm first layer I have to set z correction to -2.3 which is above the recommender -2.0.

What do you think about this? Do you think the sensible distance of my pinda is wrong or do you see any user mistake here?

try to get it .6 to the tip. my guess is your live Z should be 1.3(ish).

Hi Toaf,

thanks for the quick reply. As mentioned it’s already .1 lower than than you recommended and .5 lower than the manual recommends and I still have to go past -2.0.

 

Thats exactly what leaves me worrying if my Probe malfunctioning.

Live-Z is how much the nozzle should be moved to get into printing position when PINDA is at height it starts to sense print bed.

Physically lowering the PINDA means the nozzle is effectively HIGHER and thus live-Z must be more negative to compensate.

The lower you physically position the PINDA probe, the more negative your Live-Z value. Don't get it backwards in your head or you'll chase yourself out of range.

I would go back and reposition the PINDA to 0.8 mm above a CLEAN nozzle tip and redo XYZ calibration. Then your live-z values should be more in line with the rest of us. Note emphasis on CLEAN nozzle tip. Crud on end of nozzle messes up the process.

Thanks a lot for setting this straight. Looking back I can’t tell what I thought instead 😂

i installed it higher (requires some force because the holder was a little underdimensioned even with the screw out. 

Now i have a squish first layer around -0.75.

One remark for others reading this. In the xyz calibration the (perfectly clean) nozzle caught the paper. I decided to still not abort  and hold the paper down instead to be able to judge how low the nozzle already is. It was just so slightly touching the paper, not really scratching it. This means there were still ~0.1-0.2 mm distance before crashing into the heat bed.
