Odd problem with certain filaments?

Hi folks,

Narrowed a strange problem to a particular filament set.

Bought a bunch of the best rated filament brands to test and have found that filaprint is particularly poor, but just wondering if there's something I'm missing.

Prusament silver - prints great
Sunlu white - prints great
Sunlu black - prints great
Sunlu - orange prints great
3dfilaprint white - prints ok, ie poor first layer adhesion, inconsistent extrusion etc - basically ok once I get going and at slower speed
Same with their black reel also.

The only other variable is the other brands are 1kg reels, whereas these are 2.3kg ones.

Is there any issue with larger weight reels needing more force to turn the extra weight?

Is it normal to have such variations between brands?

(It's not like these are cheap brands, just looked up the best rated ones, hence surprised as obviously works fine for other folk!)

Hi Katie,

what happens if you start a print with the large reels but turn the spool forward a couple of times to loosen the filament drag to virtually nothing, does this help?
or spool some of the filament off onto a smaller spool and try that setup,

same filament but smaller spool, would give less drag

Hi Joan - good suggestion, tested and much the same results

I've attached a photo of it printing at the moment in case that helps, as you can see it's 'sort of' printing, just erratic surface quality.

If I swap to other filaments it's absolutely perfect instantly - gone back and forward around 7-8 times now.

Once it gets the first layer done it plods on, occasional layers looking rougher, it just seems weaker adhesion than other brands.

Any thoughts welcome!

Hi Katie,

Not sure if this would help or not, but its something I started doing and has helped with some of the issues I had with inconsistent layers and other random filament issues.

before I use a filament I put it in an oven set at 40C for at least 24 hours. Since doing this I've had far fewer issues with filament. Even the "quality" brands gave me less issues.

- 1st "printer" TIKO 3D
- 2nd PRUSA i3 MK2S with MMU v1
- 3rd PRUSA i3 MK2S
- 4th PRUSA i3 MK3 with MMU v2- 5th?? PRUSA i3 MK4 (upgraded from MK3) with MMU v3 (waiting for…

Hi Bytor,

Thanks for the suggestion - will give that a go (now the ovens in the kitchen are a little less in demand after Christmas!!).

I've concluded it's definitely the filament, just trying to determine if 3dfilaprint is just a generally duff brand that should be avoided or if I was sent a couple of dud batches (is odd that it's two reels with different batches which leads me towards the former).

Have raised with the company and will keep posted. Might try the oven trick with one reel out of curiosity (although given all other brands print perfect, I can't see why I'd want to have to do this each time!)
