Newbie problem with printer wanting to change colors

Hi,

I've been printing with my Mk3S for about a week now. Things have generally gone well and when they haven't I've been able to figure out the problem on my own.

But now for some reason when I print something, it wants to do a pause and unload filament then reload filament at the last layer or two. I am not changing colors or filaments and I don't know how to shut this filament change off to stop it.

I've done a bit of googling and searching the PrusaSlicr program for a setting, but I'm evidently a bit too thick to figure it out.

Thank you for your help!

It is not a PrusaSlicer setting. The printer filament sensor is not detecting the filament properly. Search this forum for filament sensor problem for your printer. The solution is different for MK3, MK3S,  MK3 with MMU2, or MK3S with MMU2S.

RE: Newbie problem with printer wanting to change colors

Hi,

Thanks for the interesting reading. I spent an hour looking and reading through the posts. But that sensor issue isn't quite what is happening. And I perhaps didn't explain the issue clearly enough - my mistake! The printer literally sends itself to the filament change position, (bed all the way back on Y, the X over to the right side, and Z about half way up it's travel. It beeps then displays remove filament, then asks if you did remove the filament, then asks to reload the filament, then extrudes a length of filament and then asks if the color is correct or not. It then will print the last layer completely and be done. It's always the last layer and it always is a color change routine.

I would think if this was a mechanical issue, it should be random and occur at any time during the print. Not on the very last layer every time. Nor should it cause the printer to go through the change filament color routine.

Perhaps I need to re-run the setup wizard again?

Have you tried printing something completely different, and had the same problem?

RE: Newbie problem with printer wanting to change colors

Hi,

Yes, this occurs over many different prints. I've downloaded .stl files from thingiverse and the Prusa repository and sliced them and have this issue and I've had this issue with my own self created designs. This must be an issue I've created for myself without realizing it.

It seems to be related to the PrsuaSlicer software somehow. If I do the slice, and then move the slider up and down to look at the layers, this color change seems to happen. If I slice and don't look at the layers, then it seems to not be a problem. But the data is still pretty slim yet. I did delete the Prusa Slicer and dumped my config file. Then redownloaded the slicer again and reran the wizard. I did 2 prints and didn't have a problem.

Looking at the g-code I did not find an M600, (I think that is the the M command), in a what I would expect to see for a color change routine either.

Hi Dalee.

you are correct, M600 is the filament change command.

It should not get into Gcode, unless you instruct Prusa Slicer to put it there or you edit the file yourself.

Other than that, the filament sensor is the most likely cause.

You can test this, by turning the filament sensor off.

if the sensor is off and you still have a problem, we need to look at the Gcode and the printer firmware.

One of the issues with the filament sensor is that it can activate and then when you look at the display in Support Sensor Info, the IR sensor has restored...  leading to confusion.

I have modified my filament sensor to have an LED indicator  which displays the sensor status immediately...

this helps with adjustment of the filament sensor.

Hi,

I think I have solved my issue. I deleted the Prusa Slicer and deleted the config file for it also. I re-downloaded Prusa Slicer and now it seems to be behaving properly.

I suspect that when I tried to save a configuration for a filament to print a small vase I designed, that's about when the problem began.

Thank you for all the help! I've learned somethings!

@dalee1002000

I too had this problem until I figured out that I accidentally put the Prusa slicer in “multifiliment” mode while I was looking at the sliced layers.  It was not obvious that I clicked on on small icon just next to the layer slider which then allowed a different filament selection for each part or modifier. I don’t have the Prusa slicer running on my iPad so I’m not able to grab a screenshot.
