New printer, frequent failures with "Crash detected"

Hi, I'm a brand new user, just finished assembling my first Prusa MK3+. I ran the calibration, setup the first layer, and now I'm trying to print some simple models.

The Prusa Logo printed decently - perhaps not perfect, but not too bad.

The whistle printed flawlessly - straight lines, no layer shifting, no problems as far a I could tell.

Here is the problem: As soon as I am trying to print other models that I download from Thingiverse, the printer stops frequently with the error "Crash detected". It is happening with several models, at different spots, sometimes when I'm trying to print from Simplify3D, and sometimes when I'm slicing the model with the Prusa slicer and printing it from the SD card.

Do you have any ideas for me how to avoid these crash problems? What do I need to calibrate better for that?

Thank you!

Oleg

Thingiverse is a great source of really badly designed objects, I don't think it's the problem in your case but a beginner is strongly advised only to attempt prints where  a photo of a successful print is provided.

Crashes on new builds are most often caused by:

Obstructions in the X or Y path, misaligned cable ties at the rear of the print head are frequent.

    Incorrectly tightened belts.

Loose drive pulleys - it's easy to misalign the grub screws.

    Badly installed idler pulleys.

In the LCD menu you will find Error Stats, this will tell you which axis is reporting problems.

In your case small prints in the centre of the bed have printed OK, I assume the failures are larger objects..?  If this is the case belt tension is the most likely culprit but check everything.

I have had similar experiences.  Can you zip and post you gcode?  I will try to print it.

Thank you so much for your response! You got me closer to understanding my possible issue(s)...

So, the Failure Stats clearly point at Axis Y, and I noticed a few irregularities with it, I'm just not sure how to address them:

- The Belt Test is telling me that the belt is too tight (the numbers are always below 240), even when the belt is very loose, to the point of "skipping" under pressure. Should I pay attention to these numbers, and how should i gauge the tension?

- I noticed that while the extruder is moving smoothly along the X-axis, the bed movement is not too smooth - it goes through areas of more tension and less tension. When I move the bed from the from to the back, the movement has 4-5 distinct "stop points" with much tighter tension than usual. I feel that this is abnormal, but I don't know what could cause this issue

Do you have any ideas for me, regarding these issues?

Thanks again, your response is very helpful!

The readings are a measure of the power required to move the bed; in a properly set up printer this roughly equates to the belt tension.

When twanged you should hear a distinct, low, musical note.  Prusa supply a file for a belt tension meter, when you are printing again you can make one for fine tuning.

First: Clean and lubricate the smooth rods.

If no better:

Are the smooth rods damaged?   Did you notice scratches when lubricating?

Loosen the belt by unscrewing the idler.  Check the idler pulley.

Check the motor; turn it by hand, is it smooth? (There will be a slight, regular, granularity from the magnets but any irregular grating is bad.)

Check the motor pulley, make sure the grub screw alignment is correct.

Check the belt - no damage?

Check the print bed mountings.  If they are too tight they can distort the bed and throw the alignment, it is especially easy to overtighten if you have the 'U' bolt type.  They can also damage the linear bearings, so:

Check the linear bearings; feel them as they slide, are they smooth?  If not try to get some lubricant inside them, are they smooth now?

At each of these stages compare your build with the manual.
