Re: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
After about 2-3 weeks of successful prints, I’ve stumbled onto the dreaded clogging and filament grinding issues again. Oddly enough it only happens when I don’t use Fillamentum Vertigo Gray. So I can print the Vertigo gray no problem, but all 10+ of my other rolls are having clogging issues. Even the Prusa provided silver PLA. My mind is boggled. Really wish I went with the creality CR10 now as that was the only contender in my budget. I hope Prusa can admit they’ve dropped the ball and help everyone who bought a MK3S get their issues fixed.
Will look into troubleshooting through this weekend.
Will also look at Dan’s potential fix, I guess I don’t mind spending the $60-$80 to get a new hot end if that fixes my issues once and for all.

Just realized you said heat break, not hot end. I just placed an order for a stock E3d v6 heatbreak. Looking forward to some successful prints!
Re: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Hey Abdul,
Sorry to hear about the clogging happening again, I suspected you might have future problems but was hoping otherwise.
Yes, just the heatbreak. Should only cost $16 and don’t forget some thermal paste as well.
Since the fix, that 48hr print ran correctly with no clogging. I ran it at 215c and 110% speed to reduce it to 44hrs. I have found that the fillimentum I’m using likes hoter temperatures. This might be why you had some success with their filaments and not other (more thermal resistance).
Re: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
hi abdul im also experiencing all these for the past 3 weeks and i bought it assembled
what do you mean by sanding down the part? isnt the bondtech gear locked in place because of the motor screw? im really desperate now as these bs have been going on for a while and prusa support had no solutions too

tried the solution and sanded down about 2-3 mm and shifted the motor then started a benchy print which failed when i checked the motor was back in the original position
Re: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Hey zen,
Read my post from the last page and check out the diagrams. Sanding isn’t necessarily the solution.
I would suggest you buy a standard e3D v6 1.75mm heatbreak. You can buy one on amazon for around $16. Since I’ve switched mine out, I haven’t had a clogging issue, and my average print time is around 12 hours long.

hi but issue is im not getting clogging just filament grinding and breaking tho i already ordered a new heatbreak
Re: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Hey zen,
Ok, it sounds like you might need to loosen the screw for your bondtech gear door. If you’ve already tried that, then maybe look at better quality Fillament? I don’t know what your trying to print with. But your gear tension shouldn’t be strong enough to shear it during the print.

I think it's a combination of both if not just the heatbreak. I've concluded that the gear on the extruder motor is indeed misaligned on my printer and probably other's printers as well. There's no doubt i have about that. However, Dan's explanation on the matter is very logical as well. I've just replaced the heatbreak (thermal paste and all) about an hour ago and I'm witnessing a flawless print being made right now (small benchmark print just to make sure all is well). The true test will be tonight when I start a 12 hour print.
If you've already sanded the part down that I've mentioned before in the image, you should have screwed the extruder motor plate tightly into position so it wont move back. Mine has not moved since screwing it in, so perhaps you just didn't tighten yours enough?
Either way I agree that Prusa should have handled this issue more gracefully. This is a big flaw in a printer that is touted to be ultra reliable.

alright thanks for all the input ill rebuild the whole extruder when the heatbreak arrives

Woke up to the print being 90% complete. Has not jammed over night, but there's some layer separation and under-extrusion happening about halfway through the print. The good news is that it didn't stop printing. I'm sure the layer separation is either because my spool holder (TUSH from thingiverse) is messing up - long story, need to reprint it - OR my belts have loosened since re-tensioning them about two weeks ago. Maybe even perhaps the idler screw isn't tight enough. I found that the X belt kept slipping out of its grooves before I tensioned it before, so I'll need to find a permanent solution for that.
Will keep messing with the printer till its flawless but this heatbreak replacement did the trick as far as clogging and jams go!
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Having the same issue on 1 week old printer MKS3, worked great for 3 prints then started failing at different points in the print. I was told to add heat paste by Prusa tech. Just ordered the E3d v6 heatbreak based on conversation here. Prusa also sent me a new firmware version that would adjust the voltage to the extruder motor however it was a lower level firmware version than what came with the machine so every time I tried to run it the printer would say a newer version is available please update and that is as far as it would go. Still waiting on PRUSA tech support. Am able to print with petg so far without issues but have only done a single print of the fan shroud that broke due to being removed so many times to get the hotend out so I could get the filament out of it. :/
Pics of failed prints and the pla pulled out of the hot end with the tube still on the filament. There is a blob on the hot end that would not allow me to pull it thru.
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
In Printer Settings:Startup G-code: comment out the version line and the warning goes away.
M115 U3.7.1 ; tell printer latest fw version
to
; M115 U3.7.1 ; tell printer latest fw version
Then next to the profile name, upper left, click the "floppy disk" icon and save the profile to something like "MK3S - no version check" ...
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Thanks I will give that a try!
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
Does the MK3S already ship with the E3d v6 heatbreak? I looked on the home page and it says it has the e3d heartbreak but not sure if it is the v6?

Yes, it is a modified one.
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
As far as I know the MK3S ships MMU ready, which means it has the modified heat break, not the original E3D version.
RE: MK3S stops extruding mid print (filament grinding)
So would you say it would be a waste of time to replace it with the v6 as stated in the video that was shown in this post?

Just to be clear. Even the modified version is "original E3D". You can even buy it from their online store.

The modified one is optimized for filament changes. But if your PTFE tube isn't squeezed it should work without the MMU too.
The gain in reliability would be minimal if you replace the heat break.
