MK3S Kit Z Calibration Not Moving

Hi

I'm new to prusa so if i say something wrong, please let me know.
But today i just finish building the MK3S and when it started the Z calibration, what was meant to be a moving up till the top of the frame, stood still and making some normal machine noises. Although when i do the move axis, it moves like normal.

Any ideas of how to solve this problem?

Make sure those black dust covers on the two Z screws are loose and well above the motors. If they are tight they can stall the motors.

Make sure there is a gap of a mm or so.

My new mk3 did this when i finished it last week and set the xyz cal away. All i did was to manually screw the x axis up a few cm then tried again. It ran to the top and finished the calibration

Well the Z Axis can move freely and it's just when i do the Z calibration that the z axis not moving

Try this,
move the z axis to almost the top,(in the menu)
the start de z calibration.
Or do this 2 times also helps.

Having a similar problem to @steven.w24 where I just completed the MK3Skit and during calibration the Z axis does not move but there is a buzzing noise. It fails calibration. Tried the this suggestion by @peter.m26 and noticed that only one of the two Z axis motors appears to be moving (right hand side only). I checked again the connections and confirmed the Z axis motors are connected to the proper locations on the ENSIY motherboard but the results are the same. I am reaching out to the support team as well at [email protected] about this. What other recommended troubleshooting steps are there?

@Olaf thank you for the reply. I started with a chat first and the person I chatted with told me to send an e-mail to [email protected] as they were unable to help me resolve the issue. They also indicated that they'd be able to reply very soon - sounds like the live chat team does not know e-mail support may take some days. 😕

Update on troubleshooting this issue - I found that the left Z axis motor does indeed move. I removed the the trapezoidal nut from the X-end, went to settings and manually moved the Z axis, and the Z axis motor does operate! That is good, now trying to figure out why it does not move when assembled with the trapezoidal nut.

Update again - Z axis seems to work properly up and down but the Wizard fails XYZ calibration quickly with the message, "Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again." and the paper is pinched during this process. Should note that this is using the current firmware is current at v.3.5.3 (the kit shipped with this version).

Re: MK3S Kit Z Calibration Not Moving

Interesting. I'm surprised support chat sent you off to email - they must be very busy.

Anyway you now have movement. Good. I suspect one of your trapezoid nuts was binding. Seems to occur quite frequently on new builds.

Question - have you set up your Pinda as per the instructions i.e. the thickness of a cable tie higher than the nozzle?

If so is the Pinda working correctly? You should see a red led on the top end around the cable when it is at rest, and when you bring a metallic object such as a screwdriver within a millimetre or so of the grey end the LED should turn off.

Finally, when you start the xyz calibration the x axis should move right to the top of the frame and actually collide with it. There should be a second or so of buzzing from the steppers as it does this. This is how the machine knows the x axis is at the top of its travel and equally importantly that it is level - from that it calculates the height where the bed should be.

Good luck 🙂

Re: MK3S Kit Z Calibration Not Moving

Olef - thank you for the reply. Made more progress so that it at least completed the 4 point calibration and asked for the heatbed steel sheet to be installed. To get this point this what was done so far:

1) Found one screw that was not fully seated in the hot bed
2) Adjusted (lowered the PINDA sensor)
3) Moved the Z axis to the top prior to XYZ calibration
Items 2 and 3 were helped with this https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting-f62/pinda-is-out-of-align-and-z-calibration-issue-t26985.html .

Now it is failing with "Bed leveling failed. Sensor didn't trigger. Debris on nozzle? Waiting for reset".

Re: MK3S Kit Z Calibration Not Moving

Re-ran the XYZ calibration (after moving the Z axis back to the very top) and it was successful. Now working on "First layer calibration (kit only)" described in the manual. Hope this helps someone else get past the Z Calibration.

Re: MK3S Kit Z Calibration Not Moving

I ran into this same issue, when running the calibration wizard. Effectively the z-axis would not go to the top of the frame to level. This would cause the xyz calibration to fail. Note when this happened there was no binding of the motor indicating that had hit an obstacle. The extruder raised about 10mm and then proceeded to the next part of the calibration.

Expected that the extruder (traveling on the z-axis) would rise to the top of the frame and use the top of the frame to ensure it was level. When this happens i would expect to hear some motor binding as it levels the other side.

I checked the motor covers to make sure they did not bind with the motor. I also checked the trapezoid nuts which i had to remove some debris to have them spin freely on the screws. After this i am able to see that the axis travels freely up and down with no binding. Yet when i run the wizard it still fails with the same issue.

This process only works if i raise the x-axis to the top of the frame and then manually start the xyz calibration. Note manually running the calibration with the extruder set at the home location still fails with the same issue. Only after moving the extruder to the top of the frame would the calibration pass.
