MK3 first print need some feedback
All,
Had a great time with my son assembling the MK3. We did some reference prints and would like feedback on the quality and if there are any tweaks we could do to get a better print. Only assembly issue we had was with the y-axis belt rubbing up against the motor pulley wall. Other than that everything went smoothly. Here is the Prusa Logo test file:
Some parts of boaty turned out better than on my FlashForge, however, there were some issues. The first one the jumps out is the smoke stack. There is a line down the side. Also, the roof is rougher than produced by my other printer:
This top view shows an overall roughness. Do I need to lower the extruder closer to the bed?
Here is the bottom for the boat.
Here are two angles of the frog.
Any suggestions would be welcome!
Thank you.

Re: MK3 first print need some feedback
At a glance I would say first your z level is perhaps a little too close to the bed, back off a bit.
Second for the chimney, they are normal layer height change lines (seams). Slice the model and then take a look at the Preview. You will see the seems shown in the image.
Third, if you slow down Top Layer Infill a bit you will get a better surface finish.
Good luck.

That is the z-seam created as the printer finishes one layer and goes to the next. You can tweak it to an extent in slicer settings, but on cylindrical shapes like the stack, they have to go somewhere, so will be visible.
Also, the roof is rougher than produced by my other printer:
The stair-step effect is due to layer height. That's a shallow angle, so you're going to get those steps that look like a topo map due to layer height resolution. You can use smaller layer heights, but print times will increase significantly.
Here is the bottom for the boat.
That's a pretty good 1st layer. You can tune it using Jeff Jordan's "https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting-f62/life-adjust-z-my-way-t2981.htm l">Life Adjust" method which is easier to use and understand than the regular on-board routine.
You didn't mention it, but the little squishes in the corner of the Prusa logo print are due to the wiping setting in the slicer.
Overall, very nice prints. Congratulations!

Re: MK3 first print need some feedback
Layer 1 looks good; I'd be happy with it. The overall extrusion ratio looks a but high; but until you are comfortable with what that means, ignore it.
Congrats on the build and prints. If you want to see what the frog really looks like, take the time to print the 0.05 mm version. It'll answer some of your questions, too.
ps: You may want to ensure the filament is running down the middle of the drive gears, and not off to one side. If not centered, you do get too much plastic extruded.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I am going to play around with the boaty STL and see if I can get a better result with finer settings. I remembered that the boaty I printed on my other printer was set to a finer layer height.

Just queued it up. I will have a look at the differences.

I looked in the little gear opening and it looks to be centred. I will keep an eye on it though. Thank you for that tip.
