Ignore my uestion I didnt realize Live Offset was permanent so I guess this has some implication on what I seeing. Have set this to zero and will start again

Re: life adjust Z - my way

finally how much mess with all this ....;) .... Has anyone tried to lower the speed of printing for only this first layer?
You just have to turn the dial when you start printing at 50% after the first visible layer ends (if it is) turn the dial back to 100% again. It worked for me and these empty lines were eliminated. 😮

I'm an newbie, so take this with a grain of salt, but I'm pretty sure most of the popular slicers will add a slowdown for the first layer.

Don't put the Live level on 0.
First do a First layer calibration (wizard) .. and keep the value you get there.

PLA printing with Prusa i3 MK3.

What do you think? When set to -0.525 I noticed some imperfections in the angle, while at -0.520 everything seems ok.
Is the height of the Z too low or -0.520 is ok?

Thanks!

Quick question. Does this calibration need to be done on the heat bed or can it be done on the PEI sheet as well?

Never print directly onto the heat bed, always print onto the PEI sheet.

Say, is there a test surface for PETG?

Re: life adjust Z - my way

Jeff, I have been using your latest file with great success and found my optimal live Z to be -0.375 mm on my system. However, once I being printing using the default profiles in Slic3r PE, my issues with poor first layer reproduction begins. I think it might have to do with my first layer speed settings and extrusion multiplier (flow rate).. What is the first layer speed settings in your latest gcode example and what is the extrusion multiplier set at?

I also noticed that your first layer print settings are at 225C for the extruder and 55C for the heatbed. Do you print the first layer slightly higher over spec for Silver PRUSA PLA so that it sticks better and then drop to 215C/55C for other layers?

I am very greatly for the code you provided at it does rule out a lot of variables in fine tuning these 3D printers. Just on Z height alone I have printed the best projects so far...I just want to increase the consistency of successful prints on my machine...

Re: life adjust Z - my way

Every thing that i print lifts up on the top left corner , it sticks perfectly everywhere except on the top left. i tried this tests, i tried printing the prusa logo , the batman logo and other prints , but it always lift up .
Any idea why ?
I already did the first layer cal multiple time , like every other calibration that i could do , i even reset the machine and started new...

(it's a mk3 and i recived it already built )

Re: life adjust Z - my way

So first of all, thank you for this gcode. Looks like it is exactly what I need to help properly calibrate my printer. I'm still having issues, though. I don't have pictures on me at the moment, but I can upload later - I have gone from -800 to -500 and I have had varying degrees of success. At the highest negative, I get ripples and the surface is very rough. At the lowest side, I get tons of gaps in between. What has been driving me the most crazy is that I printed at -625 and it was pristine - perfectly smooth, no gaps, and I think about 0.21mm. I then printed it again at the exact same live z just to confirm and I had huge amounts of gaps. Brought it all the way back up to -675 and still tons of gaps, so I don't know why it's not being consistent with how it prints. Could this be related to extruder calibration? I don't think I've done that. That requires a computer be hooked up to it in order to send the correct codes, yes?

Re: life adjust Z - my way

Okay, so I managed to snap a picture. The top left keeps printing with gaps. My Live Z is currently at about -0.625. That seems to give me the smoothest print on the rest of the square, but no matter what Z setting, I still have those gaps. I've also tried messing with the bed level adjustment and doing -50 on all 4 points had zero effect on that area. I'm at a loss 🙁

hi ,
waou how did you get so nice at -520 !! I've got my MK3 some days ago and reading this post and doing test as well, but i have to go by -900 , no less ..!

Hello Jeff

here is my pics from the test files you gave. thanks by the way , good simple idea.

at end , I am happy but when you see through with light behind ,i also have some space between some layer and other not !! like i read futher on this post , on printing object the result is really nice but i think can improve !

how get it better on this small space between line ?

sorry for bad or wrong english , welcome France 😉

It looks like there is still a lot of misunderstanding of this setting.
Just for clarification: In terms of print quality it doesn't matter if your ideal first layer is at -1000 or -100. It's only an indicator that your PINDA probe is set physically higher or lower.
-> If you can pass the XYZ calibration and your good looking first layer is at -100, keep it like that!
-> If you can pass the XYZ calibration and your good looking first layer is at -1000, keep it like that!
There is no need to tweak this or "make it better"

The only issue you might face is if you have to set it greater then -1000. Something around -1300 and -1700 would mean that your PINDA probe is at the same height/level then your nozzle. Most likely you will touch with your probe the bed and the printed part.

Hope that helps.

Re: life adjust Z - my way

Thanks Nikolai ,

that was clear for me , and was clear in the hand book print from Prusa..

I was just surprise that some can get -500 and not bad printing ..

-930 for me is correct and don't touch my pinda.

Just 1 question adding . when i print lot of piece (like the one for the Ikea lacq table) btween each piece i have some spider threads , very think and easy to take it out . but just wonder me if you guys have same ? is normal or , should not have....?

Thanks for share

This is called oozing or stringing. It's normal to certain degree. You can adjust this with retraction and temperature settings.
Check this site. You will wind most of the cases with images and the root cause: https://www.simplify3d.com/support/print-quality-troubleshooting/

Waou Niko

great website on 1st look exactly what i have sometimes , oozing ok new word for me , i knew Ooz magic guy movie but now i know on 3D... 💡

the under extrusion i have it too no so big , but still and the layer shifting is really crazy funny on the links ...i solved it as i got this and correct the belt on X Axe now so far so good..

thanks again, will read , adjust and forward... 😕
