Leftover red cable from hotend
Hi, I have completed Chapter 8. I built the printer very carefully but at the end of Chapter 8, I found that there is a very long left over red cable. One end is connected to the socket for the Extruder heater on the EINSY Rambo motherboard but the other end is not connected to anything. It is just free. From Step 14 of Chapter 5, it seems to be somehow connected to the extruder but got broken. Any suggestion on what to do? Do I need to get a replacement of the entire extruder?

Ouch ... looks like you broke the heater cartridge wires. The two large red fabric insulated leads connect the heater to the EINSY. Small wires, big heat resistant insulation. Unless you were lucky to break the wire well away from the cartridge and have access to a spot welder or silver solder equipment... you'll need to get a new cartridge.

it almost looks like he might have broke it far enough away to make it fixable semi safely. make sure to order one right away if you do try to fix it.

Could be Toaf - Peter, snap a sharp photo of this spot, try to get an angle on the two wires coming out of it. One will be going into the red sheath, the other will be out in the open (or broken off flush at the cartridge).

Looks very fragile. Why they made such important part this way? Those red wires were tightened together. I did not unwrap them and notice the problem until the last chapter.

Contact support via CHAT and tell them you found it that way at assembly. It's possible they came from Prusa broken. They should send a replacement under warranty. But with the next one, be extremely careful with it.
ps: It's the type of wire used in the cartridge - it is not tolerant to flexing. It's like bending a paper clip: you get to do it exactly once: second bend breaks it.

While I remove the components, I noticed that the black kind-of-sticky cable cover for the hotend fan also got some wears/broken holes. The inner three thins wires probably are OK. What caused the wearing given that I have not even used the printer? Is it better to also replace it or just use it as is?

Is the wear at the spot the wire goes under the extruder plastic? Check the ends of the screws on the heat bed connection cover for fragments.
If you see any debris there, it's a common occurrence for the wires to hang down and scrap those housing screws while moving things around.
If you haven't played with moving the bed and extruder back and forth, and that region of wire is scrapped, then it almost sounds like Prusa shipped you used hot end parts. This would be a new low for Prusa ...

Sorry I meant the hotend fan cable in black. Should have posted on another thread. Shall I ask them to send a replacement? What is the cause of the wear? Printer has not been used yet but already wears. Why don't they use more durable parts?

That is what I am saying: broken parts in the box are manufacturing defects. You need to be contacting Prusa about this and demand they make it right.

The holes poked in the fan wire isn't wear ... but may have been done using pliers to push the cable into the extruder track. So I can see why they would fight it. Same with the broken heater wire. Rough handling during assembly can explain both.
To be honest, I was a bit "unimpressed" with how fragile the heater wires seemed when I got my printer. But I have decades of experience with fragile electronics and know fragile when I see it, and handled the hot end accordingly and did not move or bend the heater wires at all.
Moving on - buy a new heater - you can order from Prusa and get the proper length and connector pre-made. Or order from E3D via Amazon, you'll get it quicker with less shipping costs, but you will need to prep the cable yourself. Based on your experiences so far, I recommend you buy the pre-made cable. When you receive it: treat it like fragile plique-à-jour.

Thanks. I am an engineering professor. I have built computers and small devices. I know how to treat fragile components. I don't think I used a piler or something sharp to push the cable inside. For something like that, I would have used the smooth, round ball-shape edge Allen Key or finger to gently to push it in. That is why I wonder why the cable became like that.

Peter - I'm inclined to believe Prusa is rushing to fulfill shipments and they are failing in their QC efforts. I've also been on the receiving end of home builders who were less than careful in handling electronics. Between the two I try to keep an open mind to what might be root cause of several issues occurring at the same time, and guide accordingly. No disrespect was intended.

No problem. We all want to know the cause to avoid this sort of things from happening again. Perhaps Prusa uses low quality, cheap components... With respect to knowledge about Prusa's products, I am just a baby.

Some things are top shelf, other things appear to be lowest bid. And then you see Prusa say the bearings come pre-lubricated. Of course, the bearings are NOT prelubricated, and should be cleaned and packed with grease before installation. So some of what they do seems self defeating.
In general the kit and printer are good value for the money; but there are things that could be done better.
