Layer issues - Uneven layers

I'm having a common issue that I am having trouble fixing.  I'm having random layer problems.  If I print a test cube, the sides the sides are ragged with bulges and such around the entire surface.

Questions I have while troubleshooting:

Live-Z - Does this also set how the layer squish is between all of the layers or just the first 5?

What other variables are involved in making smooth sides (on all sides.. Its another issue if it's only on one dimension) on the test cube?

RE: Layer issues - Uneven layers

Live-Z adjusts the distance between the nozzle and print surface at the 0 position. It will impact your 1st layer. If it is too close (too negative on the Mk3), you can get the "elephant's foot" defect where the bottom layer has a slight ridge around the perimeter of the part. The first few layers can be affected. Above those layers, Live-Z ceases to affect print quality, unless you are getting poor adhesion and bottom warping, which can cause cumulative defects further up the print.

It would be best if you would post pictures. Drag & drop images into your post as you edit. It's a little clunky, but it works.

@bobstro

It posted weird, but I think you can see the issues.  The bottom looks okay, but the top has extrusion issues and then there is also all those collapsed layers.

SOLUTION:
  • Updated the firmware
  • Deleted and reinstalled slicing software (and re-sliced the test cube)
  • Re-adjusted PINDA height (was a little high)
  • Completed entire Setup Wizard
  • Turned off Silent Mode
In the end, I think the PINDA was the worst offender. It's possible that the calibration had gotten screwed up along the way, but it was really high (maybe 1.3+mm).

Even after all of the physical adjustments, my cube still failed. The final things that fixed it was updating the firmware and turning off Silent Mode.Seeing as I had the Silent Mode on to turn off Crash Detection, which seemed to never work right, I turned on Normal Mode with CD turned off.

Just for S&G I have it all turned on and am trying a bag clamp to see if the crash detection in 3.9 is working better.
Anyway, wanted to post this for the next guy that searches for issues with irregular layers issues.
