Jam, then black ring was pulled out!?

Hi folks! Just got my MK3 set up, had a couple great prints with PLA and then had a jam. Was attempting to pull the filament out of the top of the extruder with pliers, and when the filament came out a small black ring (see attachment) also came out! Can someone explain what exactly this piece is, and how to get it back where it belongs if necessary? Thanks in advance

@millner-ryan If that part has come loose then you must have removed the whole extruder, which you do not describe.
In that case, it is a collet ring and it is very important for printer function.
Push the ring back where it should sit, then lift the ring up a little (max 1mm) and mount the teflon tube while lifting the ring. When the teflon tube is mounted, it should be fully secured without any gap.

@rhdreambox

Thanks for the info! I didn’t actually remove the whole extruder, I simply used pliers to remove some jammed filament outside of the top of the extruder and when it came free, the ring also came out of the filament load hole. Will replace using your instructions, thanks.

So I partially disassembled the extruder to get a look at the PTFE tube / collet ring - I believe everything seems fine, see pic. I reassembled without the black ring (not sure what it is or where it goes), had to re-calibrate Z and lower it -0.500 mm but seems to print fine now. I'm not convinced the black ring is the collet ring, since it appears my collet ring is fine, so it's still a mystery to me what that ring is...
