Issues with Y-axis

Hello all,

I've been having lots of issue with my Y-axis since assembling my printer and exercising it. I keep having a lot of Y-axis crashes mid-print and lots of time where the printer will forget the Y location of home, which will cause it to crash on the 9-point calibration check prior to prints. I have also noticed that the Y-axis motor sounds terrible when making small movements when compared to the X-axis motor. I know stepper motors will make weird noises, but this noise sounds wrong. Additionally, I noted during assembly that the Y-axis motor has a band of large resistance about every 35 deg of rotation to the point that I can't move the Y-axis smoothly by hand like I can with the X-axis.

I have checked and adjusted the following items:

  1. Y-axis belt tightness: I have adjusted the belt tightness so it's within the recommendation in the handbook. It's roughly at 245.
  2. Lubricated axis: I have applied lots of the supplied grease to the Y-axis (and others) and cycled it a few times. This does not resolve the roughness in the stepper motor.

I can successfully get prints by turning off the crash detection, but I'm having to perform a lot of XYZ calibrations in order to get a successful print due to all the Y-axis crashes. Are all the symptoms I have described caused by a defective Y-axis stepper motor? Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

Thank you.

RE: Issues with Y-axis

Check if you can move the y-axis, by hand, if it is not moving good, you have to de-assemble it.

Grease the bearings on the inside with thicker oil.

Check the rods and  bearings for damage.

Are the bearings  build wrong , to tighten, they can deform.

After building and the printer works, you need to do maintenance on the rods, put thin oil with PTFE in the oil, after cleaning.

Check belt, and if everything is tighten, screws etc.

The linear bearings are fixed with U-clamps. You probably tightened them too strong? Maybe the linear rods are not parallel to each other?

I removed the belt from the Y axis and the bearings glide smoothly along the rail. I did solve the issue. It turns out the pulley attached to the Y axis motor was slightly rubbing against the motor housing, causing the resistance I observed. I readjusted the pulley and all is well now! Thank you all for your advice. Happy printing!
