Is this a problem with my X belt tension?
See picture. My sample size is pretty low, so take these observations with a grain of salt. It seems to happen with PETG but not with PLA, frequently affects the first few layers and seems to happen more often at times when there's some delta with the previous layer (as in the hole in this picture) than when there are successive identical layers.
Does this look like a belt tension issue? My numbers are X: 276, Y: 287 -- so the X is (I gather) on the loose side while the Y is too loose, and yet I don't have issues printing in the Y direction, only in the X direction.
As it hasn't yet happened with PLA, I was thinking it might also be temperature dependent.

im pretty new to this, but my X belt is almost exactly the same as yours and i havent had that much layer shifting. it's within the +-40 range from 240 that prusa recommends. with that said, im thinking of tightening mine as it's the only thing i can think that is causing my layer shifting (much more minimal than yours). i've checked the pullies and everything else in the guide they published about layer shifts.

I think you should check if the end pulley wheel rotates easily.
If the center screw is too tight, you may experience this problem. Keep in mind that the details are made of soft plastic, not steel.

Thanks for the link to the troubleshooting page; I hadn't been able to find that before.
It turns out that the set screw on the stepper motor was loose, which was quite surprising in that I know I had tightened it before. Is it possible for the screw to become loosened if there's an excessive amount of friction in x-axis travel (in my case, because the 2kg spool of filament is too large and rubs against the frame)?

There an immense number of direction changes on the stepper motors. If you tightened the screw. Slightly off square on the motor shaft flats. Then it is likely to back off under use!
