Initial setup layer heighth?

Hi,

I just arrived at the point where I should set my Z-value during the initial setup. The patches look good - but what is the intended thickness of that printed single layer square at the end of the meander?
With my (so far) best looking print, I measure 0.2 mm (and yes, that thickness changes according to the Z-setting).

It sounds like you're using the on-board Live-Z adjustment routing. I recommend you try the "Life Adjust" procedure for your initial adjustment. Rather than printing individual strands and that tiny square, it uses a 75x75mm a single 0.20mm layer thick so it's much easier to gauge the impact of a line on its neighbors.

Ideally, when you've got your Live-Z set correctly, you can run a finger across the lines without them popping off easily. If they do, you're too high. You may still be too close, and the larger square print makes that apparent as adjacent layers curl and buckle.

The most important thing is to be sure your print bed is clean before starting. Give it a dunk under the sink with dish soap. Avoid touching it at all costs. Use 91%+ isopropyl alcohol frequently between prints, though not necessarily every print. Use 100% acetone if alcohol alone doesn't work (perhaps monthly). Dunk it under the sink again if that doesn't work. Give it a very light scuff with a 3M Scotch-Brite or equivalent pad if nothing else works. And avoid touching it at all costs!

The key thing you're after is the appropriate amount of "squish" to provide good bed adhesion. The amount of filament extruded will be the same from layer-to-layer, so to directly answer your question: In a perfect world, the thickness will be exactly the layer height you select. In practice, that might give you a cylindrical extrusion with poor layer-to-layer adhesion.

Thanks - for all those tips. I've skimmed over the live adjust thread, and that sounds exactly what I was looking for.
