Incredibly slight hiccup when calibrating on X. Only happens after power up.
Hi, I'm trying to get past a selftest error while calibrating on X. (Axis length X error). I'm having this strange behavior where the motor is having a small hiccup in the same point on the rails. In the video below you can see it at 0:04. It's incredibly slight and hard to see.

It only happens when the extruder is moving left to right (not retracting back right to left). And, oddly, it only happens on the first self test after I power the printer on. After the 2nd + test the hiccup does not occur. This leads me to think that there is some issue in the software and not the hardware. Albeit, the selftest axis length X error occurs every time.
Does any one have any ideas? Thank you!
RE: Incredibly slight hiccup when calibrating on X. Only happens after power up.
This ‘hiccup’ is normal. It happens for instance on my MK3S+ when doing a belt tension test. Exactly on the same place as in your video and only going left to right.
Selftest error isn’t related to that hiccup and must be something preventing the normal travel of the extruder along the X axis. Have you checked carefully that none of the cables or zip ties are interfering ? Can you move manually the extruder all the way to both sides ?.
Or maybe you tightened a bit too much the screws securing the X-carriage back and the bearings are squeezing the smooth rods. If so, the machine notices excessive resistance when moving the extruder and triggers an error.
Have you been using the printer normally for some time or is this your first pre-run test after assembling the machine ?
RE: Incredibly slight hiccup when calibrating on X. Only happens after power up.
Thanks! This is the first pre-run test after assembling. I've spent 2 days on this & have done everything obvious that I can think of
- There are no obstructions on the X axis.
- Lubed both x-rods.
- The x-motor is not slipping, (screwed into the flat tooth on the motor shaft), the gear and belt fit perfectly.
- There is no tension/hiccups when I manually move the x left & right.
- It's aligned perfectly on Z.
- X plate on the extruder is tight; wires are snug.
- Belt is tensioned at 250. Have tried 230, 260.
- The wire harness is not causing any tug on the extruder.
- This is a bear upgrade; so I've taken the Z axis apart, resquared the X&Y bear frame, resquared Z.
I'm not really sure what else to try now. I wish the debugging information would give me more details so I could figure it out. Thank you for your input!!
