i3 MK3 Multi Material Kit reverse back to original MK3?

Make long story short:

I bought do it yourself assembly MK3 and it worked perfectly. Till I got Multi Material kit and I put everything together and I ran into issues - feeding issue. It seems the filament will not go in the hole (the filament kept going other way or not at target). I struggled with that and gave up. I left it sitting for few months now. This morning, I tried again and still the issue and I fed up with it.

The question is - is it possible for me to reverse back to original single feeding system?

Have you contacted support for help with your issue? I see you haven't posted here for help. My first suggestion is to go over to the MMU2 section of the forum and post up the details to your issue. In all likelihood we can probably help you get it working.

If you are dead set on just giving up, then yes you can return it to a plain MK3 or MK3S rather easily. The simplest manner is to simply to disconnect the MMU and remove the PTFE that connects it to the extruder. At that point it is a MK3S with a variation to how the IR sensor works. In this case the sensor isn't tripped until the filament is in the gears which means you need to press the filament in to trip the autoload function and if you let the filament run out the sensor isn't tripped until after it passes the gears (and therefore can not back out).

More involved is reverting all the way back to a MK3 (will require changing the firmware) or to the true MK3S. For the MK3 you need to completely disassemble the extruder and X carriage and then follow the MK3 assembly instructions. For the MK3S you need to remove the extruder from the X carriage and then rebuild it following the plain MK3S instructions.

For the MK3S I believe the MMU2S comes with all but 1 part. It's the funny looking part that the filament passes through with a cone on one end. For the true MK3S that part has a slot to hold the ball bearing. Maybe you need to print the top cover too?

RE: i3 MK3 Multi Material Kit reverse back to original MK3?

I ran my mk3/mmu2 as a mk3 most of the time.  I was able to get some useable multi-color prints, but I’d typically have a 90% chance of one or more filament load issues during a print, a 50% chance of them being all recoverable (leading to a good print).

Definitely when running single material the MMU2 added a level of frustration to the initial filament load.

Because of that, I would run my mk3/mmu2 as a mk3 most of the time.  To do it:

- unscrew the PTFE tube from the top of the extruder
- unplug the MMU2 end of the MMU2 <-> Einsy cables.

Done.  At that point, if you power on the printer it doesn’t detect the MMU2 and just acts like a MK3.  Feed filament directly into the hole just like before.

(I haven’t done this in a while, BTW, so YMMV.  I’ve upgraded to mk3s/mmu2s and generally run my single filament prints in 1 filament MMU2s mode.  The filament loads most of the time, maybe 70%, and if it doesn’t I can just power cycle and try again.

Okay. It sounds complicated (forgive me.... :-/) to convert it back to single feeding system.

I'm going to try video the issue and post it here or to the support - hopefully they can see the issue and help me with that.

Thanks guys.
