Higher live Z values

I've been getting great prints and first layers since I finished assembly last week. My only concern was that my Live Z values seemed to be higher than what I see everywhere else. I did the calibration with the nozzle touching, pushing the PINDA down until it touched the zip tie in the middle and all that. I even went back and did it again but ended up in the exact same place.

On the Smooth sheet with PLA at -1.40 is about perfect. On the Textured sheet its -1.65.

Like I said, I repeated the process again just to be sure and it was within about +- 0.1 as before. I know the absolute values aren't really important but it just seems weird that everywhere else I see it's a smaller absolute number.

Anything to worry about here? My first layers seem nice and even. Anyone else have values in this same range?

Just trying to make sure everything is solid before starting some of the larger prints I have planned.

Hi @trimetric,

No worry to have about that. Assuming you have a MK3S+, it is supplied with a SuperPinda Probe. The S.Pinda is more sensitive than the Pinda supplied with MK3S, it is therefore normal that your probe detects the sheet earlier than the Pinda, so you have to go lower during the Z-offset setting.

If this value worries you or you want to be more in the center of the adjustment range, use something thicker than a zip tie, maybe 2 bank cards on top of each other would do the trick.

My live Z for PLA on the smooth sheet is -500.  for PETG, I start at -520 and will go as low as -560 if a filament is being pickly

Ah, ok. So maybe when I see people with much lower values, it's not the Super PINDA? I do have the MK3S+ and didn't realize there was a difference in the probe. I think I saw as long as it's less than -2.00 it's shouldn't be a problem. I mean, I feel like I did exactly what they said (twice) and I ended up with the -1.4 and -1.65 values both times.

Given that it's working for me, sounds like I should just leave it alone. When I service the extruder, maybe I'll recalibrate and raise it up a tiny bit more. Sometimes I feel like I could spend the rest of my life just slightly tuning one more thing in search of the perfect print... 😀

premising that the textured and smooth sheets have different thickness, also the materials behave differently 😉

during the first layer calibration, I don't look at the display but just focus on the line. So i can get an indicative value sufficient to get the line sticked to the bed. After that, with an actual print, i'll fine tune the first layer

There is a good chance.

If you want to reduce you Z-offset, you can use this kind of tool. The 0.8mm value is for PINDA, the 1.5 value for SPINDA (yours).

Sometimes I feel like I could spend the rest of my life just slightly tuning one more thing in search of the perfect print.

I've done this with a cheap chinese printer, not bad but a lot of tuning before each print. I went to Prusa to avoid this. The printer is reliable. There is more to explore with PrusaSlicer  but that's another subject.

If I want to adjust my SPINDA height, can I just move the nozzle to the center, manually lower it to the print bed, adjust the probe, and then run the Z calibration or do I need to do the whole XYZ calibration to reset everything?

Z calibration and 1st layer calibration
