Gaps in first layer

I really don't understand what could be wrong.

I've done the first layer calibration and it's perfectly squished (at -0.630), but when I print something the first layer has some pretty big gaps between lines, and it seems it's printing higher than what I set it to.

It could be a slicer issue but I'm using the default prusaslicer setting at 0.20 quality so I don't understand.

Best Answer by Dan Rogers:

While most of your print may look good and your first layer looks wonky, remember, the first layer is the hardest to get right.  One thought I forgot about - if you print bed has only ever been cleaned with IPA, no matter what %, it could cause what you are seeing.

picture or it didn't happen...

Difficult to help without the slicer file (zip the saved m3f) and pictures...

I mean sure but, this is pretty much what I explained.

And what do you mean by slicer file? Do you want the model? Or the gcode? Because the slicer settings are what I wrote already, the default 0.20 Quality preset.

Could be under-extruding. What kind of filament?

The lines look well squished, not seeing any signs of too low from these pics.  That leaves under-extruding - which can have many causes.  Did you "adjust" anything in the default slicer settings for whatever kind of filament you chose?

Fillamentum PLA

Fillamentum PLA, stock prusaslicer settings. The only layer with problems is the first one, the others don't show any sign of underextrusion.

Information….

I mean: save the project after you exported the gcode from slicer. The resulting .3mf file contains all settings and the model.

Dan asked about any changed settings, he would not have to do that if you provide the complete project as .3mf-file.

You will have to answer less questions and get help faster and more precise, if you post everything related to your print, including the type (and brand) of your filament.

Stock default settings slicer file

xyzCalibration_cube

Everything about the print is completely fine, it just seems that the first layer starts higher than it should be, and I don't understand why after the first layer calibration comes out perfectly.

Who knows...

Every situation can be different.  Under extrusion may be you are using too low a temp (filamentum is not easy to print with), your nozzle may be/have-been partly clogged.  Look on the box for the filamentum - the temp ranges may need to be different than the stock PLA setting.  I print with filamentum PLA, and it can be finicky to print with.  I found it very important to look at the recommended temps on the box.  It could even be the model you are using has gaps in that first layer (look at the slicer preview to make sure).

Can't be under-extrusion, or temp, or the model

The first layer is the only one with this problem, all the other layers are perfect, and it happens on every model I try to print. I now think it has to do with either the slicer or the new firmware I recently installed. Did they recently change anything substantial in either of those?

RE: Filamentum

As Dan said, every situation and printer is different. I use Filament PLA a lot and I am very happy with the results using the unmodified preset (as you did).

I printed your file (sliced exactly with your settings) with blue Filamentum PLA on the satin sheet. This is how the first layer came out:

So your problem is not slicer/settings related. There is something wrong with your extrusion in the beginning of your print. I'd suggest cleaning your extruder (cold pull) and making sure your filament is properly loaded and everything is nicely preheated before you try again.

PS: MK3S/MMU2 Firmware 3.10.0-4481/ PrusaSlicer 2.3.1

Doesn't make sense

But it doesn't make sense, if it was under-extrusion every layer would show signs of it, but they don't. I even printed another model, but it's the same exact story.

I don't understand why the first layer calibration shows one thing, and then the first layers of my models look completely different from that.

Oh, for real? I think that might be it. I started to clean my bed with IPA only recently. I'll try to not use it for a while.

RE: you might have misunderstood that.

Dan said "...if you print bed has only ever been cleaned...". IPA is not causing the problem, it just not good enough to remove all grease if there is a lot. In this case water and soap do a better job. IPA works fine for cleaning the bed if it's not to contaminated...

RE: Gaps in first layer

Such a nice print with Fillamentum PLA. I have severe troubles with all of the Fillamentum PLA, been googling help... and luckily, I have several spools of this. It is beatuful, in spool and as a finished object, but it's so darn difficult to get print properly. Biggest problem I have is heatcreep, and it happens only with this filament brand. I have even put an extra fan on top of the extruder, with no help...  All the advices, how to print this specific brand are more than welcome 😀
