Flipped pully to get Y-Axis central. Is this OK? - Archived Post
I couldn't post on the archived topic "Flipped pully to get Y-Axis central. Is this OK? " so here we are.
Out of neccessity, I too needed to "Flipped pully to get Y-Axis central.".
With the pully in the documented orintation, the pully had to be tight up against the motor. It was obviously not a good situation, so I flipped it. I don't see the difference in flipping the pully or shims to push the motor back or (OMG) printing a new motor mount.
Since people went to all the trouble of adding shims and printing new motor mounts, I'm back the archived post question, now in 2021, "Flipped pully to get Y-Axis central. Is this OK? "??
Thank you.

Is there a 2021 answer for this question (i.e. Having to put the Y Axis motor pully on "backwards")?
What's the question?
I have two MK3S/S+ - one of them I printed a new Y motor mount (love it), and the other, I just left the belt slightly off center - not wearing. The stock Y motor mount has a couple of long-standing design issues, well understood, and fixing them with a different motor mount or shims doesn't make a whit of difference on the print quality. I wouldn't fix this unless your belt edges start fraying. If the flipped pulley is working for you - good show.
Hi Dan
Here's the question: Why would anyone go to the trouble of shims and new mounts if flipping the pulley does the same thing? Because so many have, I'm concerned that I might be missing something. From your comments, it looks like I can just monitor the belt for fraying and be happy. Thanks for getting back to me.
Different pulleys may not allow that
For the stock pulley on my MK3S kit, that was not an option - the motor shaft was too short or the pulley to wide or something. I have not tried it on my MK3s+ kit - I'm just living with the belt being off center to the pulley. Prints perfectly - not going to chase it.
Ah, we have closure
In my case (MK3s+ kit), I could flip the pulley leaving the flipped pulley end flush with shaft end. In the original pulley orientation my pulley wanted to be all the way in against the motor and the belt still needed to be closer to the motor to be in alignment. If, as in your case, there wasn't enough shaft to allow the flip, then there would no other choice but a new motor mount or shims. That explains everything. Thanks again.
