First prints with errors

So my Mk3 arrived last week, and I spent a goodly amount of time this weekend putting it together. I thought I had the Z axis calibrated properly, but I am not so sure any more. Here are some photos of my first two prints:

There's a hiccup a little up the body, but I figure this was due to the fact the Filament had got tangled on the spool and was being forcefully pulled into the extruder until I untangled it.

First layer isn't as nice and smooth as I wold have liked it, and there's a hole in the first layer (bottom-centre).

A bit hard to see in this photo (couldn't get my phone to focus no matter what I tried). The last few layers look a bit "blobby" (for lack of a better word) compared to the others.

There are dumb questions, absolutely. But that doesn't mean the person who asked them was dumb - only that whoever taught them didn't do a good job, which led to the dumb question.

(continued)

Really shoddy top layers, with extruder imprints.

Close-up of the various flaws

The first layer wasn't much better

Does anyone have any idea which bit needs tweaking/dialing-in? ❓

Re: First prints with errors

doing an extruder calibration fixed the spots for me, try that: https://mattshub.com/2017/04/19/extruder-calibration/

Thanks. I'll try it tonight (GMT+10).

OK: tried the steps in https://mattshub.com/2017/04/19/extruder-calibration/ and the results were within my ability to measure (i.e., the printer fed 100mm of filament and the extrusion width was 0.45mm). 😐

I will try to do the live tuning from https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting-f62/life-adjust-z-my-way-t2981.html and see it that turns up.

Re: First prints with errors

The 100mm is expected to have an (almost) perfect match. The very important extruder calibration to do for each filament is the multiplier as described in that guide. Once you have the extrusion multiplier correctly tuned in you can then finalized your perfect live z.

Re: First prints with errors

Hi Gaston,

The 100mm filament feed fed 100mm as close as I could figure, and calipers confirmed a wall thickness of 0.45mm on the single-wall cube, so I don't know how much more I can tune on that end. 😕

Re: First prints with errors

When I followed that guide, I got 100mm so I just skipped this tuning. As it was said in this forum, due to the bondtech gears that we have (IIRC), we should be fine with this tuning.

Re: First prints with errors

Based on my limited experience, I see 3 distinct things in your pictures:

  • The rough lines at the bottom may well be explained by your filament tangle. The lines above look very clean. Unless it's a persistent issue in later prints, I'd ignore this for now.

  • Buddy's ears are likely distorted because they're the last things printed and the nozzle spends a lot of time on a small area. The resulting heat can cause problems. You may see melting or a change in finish. Look for the Filament Settings->Cooling Thresholds settings in Slic3r, or the equivalent in your slicer of choice. You can adjust so that the printer slows down, pulls the nozzle away or increases the fan on layers that print below a certain threshold in seconds.

  • The bottom of the Prusa logo looks pretty good. Based on the goopy corners on the top, you might adjust your filament Extrusion Multiplier slightly. You could try adjusting your Live-Z up slightly, but don't screw up your 1st layer adhesion.
  • The best answers may depend on how the files were prepared. Were those printed with the included gcode examples, or did you slice them yourself? If so, with what slicer and settings?
