First prints toubleshooting (Benchy boat)

Hi makers,

I've received my Prusa MK3 kit about 1 month ago and this is my first printer. I've built it by myself and started to print original models from SD Card (Marvin, Benchy Boat, etc.).

I was quit happy with the quality, but I wanted to improve it because I could see some ringing/ghosting and Z-wobble. So I've tried to print XYZ Cube and Benchy with different parameter (temperature, speed, acceleration) and different filament. I've tried to tight X and Y belts and some screws.
I was quit confused because I couldn't really see any significant improvment. I even had the feeling my prints were worse.

So I've tried to reset all my setting and retried one of my first print, Benchy Boat from the SD card with the Prusa filament in my kit (grey one). See the result below :

LEFT : Old print from a month ago
RIGHT : Print from yesterday

As you guys can see, my downskin is quit messy and I really don't know why. I've read it could be over-extruding or overheating... but how ?
This is the same GCODE and it suppose to be the same firmware, so the variable is supposed to be only mechanical/physical.

So there are my questions :

  • I updated my firmware 2 weeks ago (3.1.3), I think I had the 3.1.2 originally. Is this possible the new firmware cause this ?
  • I re-updated my firmware yesterday (using FirmwareUpdater) because I was afraid I I accidentally change some parameter. Does re-update firmware reset all variable ?
  • How can I fix this ? Is this really overtheating or overextruding problem ?

And finally, I have one more question not directly related to this issue :

  • I tried to print temperature/thin wall tower but my print failed around 45 mm. It looks like the nozzle touch the print because I can see burn area (I dont' have a photo atm). Do you know what could it be ?
  • Thank you guys for your help

Hello, yeah i 've the same problem as you. Even with the new frimware the benchy print from sd card has the same issue. I ve this probleme with prusa PLA and ColorFabb PLA but no problem at all with some cheap French PLA ...
    I cant figure why ...

That is a difficult area, on the Benchy, to print correctly. That area is at approximately a 45 degree overhang angle ending with an acute XY angle. this makes it very prone to warping at the tip. This is what I believe is happening in your photo, where the tip is warping just enough to through off the final perimeter. Due to environmental variations such as ambient temperature and moisture; as well as slight variations within filament, sensors, and other hardware; the default settings will not always work. You could try increasing fan speed, lowering temperature, slowing down the print, and many other advanced features within the slicer to fine tune settings. Unfortunately 3d printing technology is not quite to the point where a single set of settings can be "set it and forget it" for all situations.
