First Prints and first problems (x-axis misalignment, supports)

Hi,

First of all i want to introduce myself since i'm new to Prusa and the community

I've just finished mounting the printer and so far it's awesome, i had another printer (cheap one) and it's like changing my shoes for a Ferrari. 🙂 It's a world of a difference.. :-O

I've done a few test and i've got pretty good quality

  • First Print: Pusa Logo (BiColor). Perfect print
  • Second Print: Triceratops Skull. Not that good, i had 2 main problems: Layer Shifting and support really hard to remove
  • Third Print: Thanos (from Myminifactory). Mainly one problem: Layer Shifting

I'm looking some info in the knowledge base and mainly i found this 2 articles but still have some doubts

https://www.prusa3d.com/layer-shifting/

https://help.prusa3d.com/article/v40kdhc9rk-layer-shifting

First Layer:

Seems pretty good but it would be nice to have some input if it's not completely right

Supports

I had a really hard time removing supports but finally i got it done, not sure if it's supposed to be that way or i had something wrong, for instance i was thinking that maybe the layer shifting may cause the supports to stick more than they are supposed to :-?ç

The photo is once i removed the supports, in the layer shifting section i have photos with eyes, mouth, etc... supports removed but those were eay to removed, the problem was with the base supports.

Layer Shifting

I still have to apply the recommendations from the links i pasted earlier but my first guess is to try 2 things but not sure if i'm properly looking at it 😕 For instance i'm pretty sure that the problem is X-Axis (Thanos was printed looking to the front of the printer):

  • Check X Axis pulley. I'm thinking that it might be too close or far for the motor since i had the same issue with the y axis, it was hard to move and realigning it solved it, it's not the exact same case since x-axis moves pretty well, maybe a bit hard, but it might
  • Check tension on the belt. I'll check the numbers (LCD menu -> Support -> Belt Status) to see how are them, it's a common problem i had with my previous printer... i'm never sure if it's too loose or tight.. 😕

Those are may main ideas to check, seems right? I should look somewere else?

Triceratops:

Thanos ( as seen in the third photo the back is perfectly smooth so i'm assuming Y-axis is fine)

It's a long post but i think i've explained myself, hope so, and maybe with your help i can nail the setting even though for a first print i think it's a pretty good result! 🙂

Thanks a lot!

Also seen this post: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/shifts-in-first-prints-off-newly-built-kit/

I'll try to tighten the screws in the gears just in case, i think they are alright but who knows 🙂

The idea is to see if i'm looking the problem the right way or i'm totally misguided 😕 Anyway i'll post the result of my tests  🙂

Maybe I shouldn’t be so sure about things 😓 after rewieving the setup, gears, motor...  well I forgot to tighten the x-axis gear screws 😖

now i’m Out of town but as soon as I come back i’ll Post some pictures , now seems to be almost perfect 😊

As for the supports, the default Contact Z distance of 0.1mm is too close (Print Settings > Support material), it makes them very hard to remove.  I usually change mine to 0.2

I'll try some prints with support distance at 0.2 🙂 thanks for the advice

My last print with the screws fully tighten, feel free to say if you see something that i should change, seems pretty good but i'm sure there's room for improvement 👍
