First print and PETG filament

Hi
Have now manage to do the first layer calibration and after a couple of tries (it not easy to see that thin thread) itś done and the value was -.398.
However my first print was the whistle and as you can see on the pic something wrong happened at 87%, the print came off the bed and thatś when all went south. 😡
Good thing is that the 87% looked great.
So what happened?

Other question is sort of related, since I for some reason have decided to print with PETG ( after reading a lot on the net about pros and cons for PLA, PETG and ABS).
And people probably have opinions of choice but thatś not the issue here.
My question is that do I have to change the Z setting when I start to print with PETG (when I search on the net I get different answers) or can I just print with the current Z setting?

I will probably have more questions here at the forum now in the beginning so bare with me

Thanks
Krister

Re: First print and PETG filament

Depends on your brand of PETG and printer since it can extrude a little differently. Just re-do your first layer cal for PETG, write down the both values and you'll be able to swap between them easily.

In my case I tend to raise my live z by about 0.050 or so for a smooth first layer

Ok will try that.
I have calibrated Z again (have done a couple of them by now) and since I really dońt know what I should go by I have gone by feel, if it feels smooth in all direction that will be the number.
In my case it was -.435, the other in the pic I could feel the layers and if I came close to -.600 I think the nozzle came to close because the surface was very rough and jagged.

Must say that this was much tougher than I thought and being a little bit of perfectionist I could probably spend a whole day calibrating Z.

But now Ím printing the whistle again so I hope this time it will finished so I could try and print it with PETG.

Hoping for a good print 🙂

This is how the whistle came out like
Do you think it needs more calibrating?

Re: First print and PETG filament

Your first layer is too high, go lower on your Z. The separate extrusion lines should just about blend together and there should be no gaps.

Also, use this method and not the stock PRUSA routine, it's much easier to see results and dial it in. It has pictures of too high, too low, and just right for reference.

Re: First print and PETG filament

I've printed several PETG (AmazonBasics) parts after doing initial calibration for PLA, without further adjustments. Came out beautifully.

Re: First print and PETG filament

With PETG and PLA for that matter, you should not be able to pull the lines apart without really trying and even then with PETG your just a likely to rip across the lines.
When I print a 0.2mm first layer test, it is flexible yet very strong and should not have a rough surface, it may be matt, but as long as the lines dont pull apart it is good.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.
