First print, almost

My assembled Mk3 came tonight. I set it up and let it run through the calibration. I then preheated the system and ran the filament extraction to remove the leftover piece it was shipped with, then followed up with having it insert from a spool.

All good I started a Benchy print. With all going well the first few layers I left it be and checked in from time to time. The last I checked on it was reporting 30 minutes left and it still looked good. Roughly 30 minutes later I checked (2 minutes left) and found that Benchy had detached from the plate and there is a blob where the stack on top should be (see pic).

Before starting the print I did clean the plate with one of the included wipes, but I did forget that they recommend doing it before pre-heating (won't make that mistake again! 😯 ). So I'm letting everything cool down and I'll clean it again in case the heat prevented a good cleaning.

Other than the plate possibly not being clean enough, any other ideas what might be going on?

Multiple checks again for the second try and all was good until I went down with 16 minutes left to find it worse than the first. This time it didn't quite make it to the roof before it decided to add a poop emoji...

This time during one of my checks I thought it appeared that the front was lifting a bit, but no amount of back lighting was conclusive while it was printing. Afterwards, however, there is a clear warp. Going back and checking the first print and it has a warp as well.

Tossed a temp and humidity monitor down by the printer for the second run and it stayed pretty constant at 70F and 33%.

I went at the PEI sheet good with warm water and dish soap followed by acetone (meant to do the IPA), IPA, and then another round of acetone. Shining a light across it before and after cleaning showed a significant difference in the how the light played off it, so I'm still hoping it's a bed cleaning issue.

Pics are the current state of the tip, the first layer outline that was laid down, and showing the warp (though as I said during the print it was the front that was lifted).

3rd try and a good cleaning appear to be the charms. I now have a perfect Benchy 😀

It was nice that you were aware that it was a clean bed that needed a good print.
There are so many users who do not realize that detergents and water are the best medicine for such problems.

I'm surprised how clean it has to be actually. Under the halogen lamps of my office it looked clean after the alcohol wipes. It was when I hit it at an angle with a bright LED light that smudges showed up.

Indeed! Good Job!

It really is deceptive for new users, I remember when i assembled mine, I got like 3 prints that were perfect and then encountered a print release and lifting issues... 😮 I think the fact that it is a brand new machine and we are extruding plastic it puts contaminants on the sheet which are not fully removed by ISO or Acetone, only dish soap and water do it fully.

That and drafts and temperature swings can cause a lot of the problems with lifting of prints. Then later, the moisture content of the filament comes into play.

Just finished a .05mm version (.4 tip) and while it went fine I notice two things. The first is that this print is much "hairier" than the .15 was (e.g. have a handful of strands to pick off). The second is that the exposed layer changes (like along the gunwales in the rear) are much rougher.

Is this normal for the smaller layers or is it an indication that the PLA (sample of Amazon's glow in the dark vs the silver that came with the printer for the .15 print) isn't up for that resolution (or good at all)?

Glow in the dark is typically abrasive and should be used with a hardened steel nozzle... Reading the comments on Amazon for that filament shows a lot of people have problems with it, so I would think that is a good possibility.

To rule it out, I would try the Prusa supplied silver at that resolution to see if it does the same thing or not. That will give you the answer.

Yeah I know I need a hardened tip for regularly printing with glow, this was a single Benchy from a sample pack of Amazon's filaments (50g each of like 20 colors). The blue and pink prints (.15) I did from more sample Amazon PLA came out well enough

I did run a silver print over night at .05 with the .4 nozzle. It wasn't quite as stringy, but it still had similar roughness issues. After running a .1 print (with the silver) I think it's just that .05 with the .4 nozzle isn't that great of a combination. What little detail difference, in my opinion, isn't worth the extra 2 hours over the .1 print plus additional post work (if desired).

I have a .05 printing now with a .25 nozzle to see how it comes out (hopefully better than the "experience" in changing the nozzle...).
