First PETG print made a mess - can I print without the fan shroud?

First PETG print didn't stick to the bed and created a giant blob of PETG on the nozzle.  I managed to get it off, but still need to clean up the residue.

The issue is, the blob of PETG also ruined the fan shroud.  I don't have a replacement.  Can I print a replacement without the shroud in place?

Should I put something there for the time being to help channel the air?

One thing I've learned recently in trying to print PETG is that a lot of people don't turn on the part fan unless the layers are very small.  Those might not have enough time to cool on their own.  For the fan shroud, the layers probably are small, but maybe you can slow down the extruder speed to compensate.

You might be able to get by printing a PETG fan shroud without the cooling fan. Print at the coolest temperatures you can. Other filaments such as ColorFabb nGen and HT are very PETG-like but print with very little cooling.

One more thought: If you do encounter problems printing small parts of the fan, try printing a few parts of the same height at the far corners of your bed. This will provide time for the freshly-printed extrusions to cool as the nozzle is moved around the bed. You can always try positioning 4 fan shrouds in the corners and hope at least one succeeds.

The Cura slicer does have a nice feature to actually move the nozzle away from the printing part for a user-defined cool down period.

OK, managed to clean up the nozzle. there are still some little blobs around that I can't quite get to in the body, but they don't seem to be causing any issues.

After that, I decided to print a replacement shroud out of PLA and use that while printing a replacement out of PETG.  It all worked out and the printer is happily printing again.

for future reference I recently printed a fan shroud in PETG,   without a fanshroud, on my Mk3S
