First Layer Too High, Z-Offset is +0.00

Just received and assembled my MK3S yesterday. No issues during the assembly process!

However, my first layer calibration process runs and the nozzle is ever so slightly too high. The problem is that my Z-offset is set to +0.00 and I can't make the nozzle go down any more.

Here are some points:

  • My PINDA probe is exactly 1 ziptie's length above the print bed, as described in the instructions.
  • The PINDA calibration process results in the nozzle moving a piece of paper on the heatbed, but doesn't scratch the surface (it gets awfully close though!). This calibration process reports "success".
  • The 9-point bed leveling test succeeds before the first layer test begins.
  • The purge line actually adheres to the bed correctly - possibly because it has a higher flow rate? The line seems to be thicker and consists of more material.

This picture shows the Z-offset at +0.00. This is too high, and I can't make it go down any further.

first layer

Any ideas on how I can get the nozzle just a bit closer to the printbed?

Thanks!

Have you tried adjusting the Live Z value into negative numbers?

0.00 is the starting point,

You never need to go Positive,

Live Z is always negative.

Your 'Best'  Live Z value is unique to your printer today,  Change the nozzle or the build plate, rebuild the hot end, etc, and you need to check and adjust your live Z, which may well, give a new Live Z value, that works well...

The Prusa first layer calibration tool  is difficult to use,

I use 'Life Adjust 'Z' My way'   (Link below)

there are test files in a zip file at the bottom of the first post in the thread

Hello and welcome in Prusaforum!

Did you try this: While the printer is printing the first layer, go to LCD-menu -> Live adjust Z. This will show the Z-value you have set in the First layer calibration (in your case 0). From here you turn the knob so that the value goes into minus until the adhesion to the print bed is correct. You have to adjust that for each printplate. Since fw 3.8.0 there exists printplate profiles for easy switching the z-height after changing the plate (hw-setup). https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/hw-setup-menu_1943

@joantabb Thank you! I misunderstood what the Z-offset did. I was worried that my nozzle was going to crash into the bed and damage it!

I have my Z-offset dialed in now and my Prusa is printing happily. 🙂

Some concepts are initially alien... 🙂

Glad you're Printing now!
