RE: First layer issue need advice on this please

Overnight this has just started.

I'm running MK3 with PLA, this is my own design and had no issue with these prints part from this morning when this has started and I can't seem to fix it.

Is this under extrusion?

The edges are not bad however when moving across the build plate gaps appear.

I've re done the life test sure and nothing shows up there so I at a loss on this.

Can anyone offer some advice please.

Cheers.

Ok, I re adjusted the Z height lower and this has fixed the issue.  Not sure what has happened with the Z height over night as I has this at -1,482 and has been perfect for the past month, just now I adjusted to -1.505 and now almost back to a normal first layer.

That's a big adjustment I think and wondering if something mechanical has cause this, time will tell.  Anyway back into a 7hr print, fingers crossed.

Nozzle wear? Changed your sheet?

Did you use a different sheet today than yesterday?  How about run some very abrasive filament?  (nozzle wear).  Bumped your pinda so hard it moved?

You have done the correct thing, this is normal.

Nozzles wear with use.  In time, especially if you are printing abrasive filament, the nozzle no longer squishes the filament as much.

It is normal to need to recalibrate the first layer Z from time to time.

Eventually the nozzle wears too much, print quality suffers and it is time to replace the nozzle.

Cheerio,

Also do you preheat/soak heat your bed before doing the live z calibration and before each print ?

Beds when warm expand.  Setting a live z when the bed is warm and then later starting a print with it cold can lead to problems like you picture.  Same with ambient, adjust z in the summer and in the winter your distance is slightly different.

Thats why I always preheat the bed and leave it for 5-10 minutes to get to equilibrium before printing sessions and also before calibrating.  That way no matter if its summer/winter the bed is always in the same state and you get much more consistent first layers.

This is especially needed if you have the older style pinda as that was more susceptible to temperature differences too.

I do look at Z height every print however this machine decided to some weird things.

Yes I always warm the machine and bed prior to every session and print along with loading PLA through the extruder and checking Z height.

I think it's just one of those things that happen with printing, no two days are the same and almost everyday something goes wrong with one of my machines.  I run 4 MK3 machines and the oldest one which is 12 months old runs the best, the new machines are gaining issues all the time.
