First layer height changes when moving in x-direction versus negative x-direction

I've been working on getting the first layer to print correctly for a few weeks now and haven't had any luck. I think I at least have a better idea of what's going on though. It seems like when the extruder is moving in the x-direction the layer height is spot-on, but when the extruder is moving in the negative x-direction the layer height is too high and the filament doesn't stick to the bed causing globs, warping, etc. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or what might be the cause?

Checking the bearings would be a good spot to start.

Power the printer off and move the extruder both directions in X.

It should move smoothly, with no binding.

While doing that, observe the X belt. It should not droop. Don't get crazy with tension - it is not critical.
