First layer calibration required for different filament

Hello,

Hopefully this will be a quick one. Curious if its best practice (or required) todo a first layer calibration for different filament after you have completed your initial calibration?

If so, what scenarios? (caveat that nozzle, sheet, etc is staying the same)

  • Switch between different filaments types (PLA vs PETG)
  • Switching between different colors of same filament (Red PETG vs Black PETG)

I get the feeling that it's a one and done question, maybe with a monthly/quarterly recalibration test regardless of the filament just to keep everything in check.

RE:

You can use up to 8 sheets to set the sheet profile.

I am using eg. TEXPLA - profile for textured PLA or other SMOPET for Petg on smoot.

off cours each filament even the same TYPE (especially being from differernt producers) and with different subcomponents (for differernt color) can have different attributes.

even an old man can learn new things 🙂

You should be able to find a sweet spot that covers all the common filaments but white is often tricksy and any inclusions (copper fill, wood fill etc) will affect adhesion.

As your nozzle wears it will get fractionally shorter.  Quarterly is about right for standard filaments.  With abrasive filament and a brass nozzle it may need re-doing after every print.

Cheerio,
