First layer and layer height problems

I got the printer assembled and everything seems to be OK. All checks come out positive. When I try to do the first layer calibration I end up with issues. First, the line is extremely thin. I have no previous 3D printing experience which means I have no reference as to how the line should look. But to me, other then the first few CMs the rest of the line is super thin.

First I ended up with this kind of results:

Then I adjusted Z down to -1.2 and started to get this. This seems better but still questionable to me.

Then I assumed that this is good and attempted to print something. Every time the print fails very early one. Below are some pictures.

I do clean the bed every time and before each print.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting will be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: First layer and layer height problems

I’m certainly no expert but after just finishing the assembly myself yesterday and having all sorts of these issues myself, I then read that the textured sheet is good for PETG, ABS etc and that the smooth sheet is best for PLA.

So today I switched to the smooth sheet (plus wiped with the supplied IPA wipe) and repeated the first layer calibration a couple of times until the square at the end was solid and didn’t have any gaps. I found it much easier to see with the smooth sheet. Also note that my live Z height was a lot less that I found with the textured sheet.

I then tried to print the Prusa logo and then the Benchy and wow.. amazing quality and both worked first time.

So my advice - try with the smooth sheet!

The other option is to find the Life Adjust thread and try calibrating your live Z with the 75x75x2 test square. It’ll give you a lot more time and an easier job to see what’s happening. It might also be worth washing the textured sheet with fairy liquid and letting it dry as well to make sure it’s 100% clean.

Yes, this was a bed type problem. I didn't have the smooth sheet, so I switched to PETG. The prints look perfect now.

Thanks for the help!
