Finished assembly but extruder behaving strangely!

I've just completed assembly and calibration but I can't get the hot end to load filament.

The LCD is set to autoload the filament but nothing happens when I insert the filament into the hot end.

I am trying to get first layer calibration set up, but I can't because the extruder motor does not run when I insert the filament. I sometimes hear the LCD panel click once when I insert the filament, but nothing after that, and the extruder motor does not run. If I allow the first layer test to run, I can see the gears in the hot end trying to slowly advance the filament, and, indeed, it does slowly draw filament in there but I can't load enough for any to reach the nozzle. "unload filament" also does not work, the extruder motor doesn't retract the filament.

Any ideas what I've done wrong? Strange that the motor does advance filament when asked, but won't load or unload it.

Thanks

Chris.

Have you tested the filament sensor ?  Check the SENSOR readout and insert filament, see if the sensor is even working.

@tim-m30

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the info. Yes, I checked everything out then it eventually dawned on me that it was a simple matter of selecting the correct temperature and waiting for the warm up! All fixed now! Josef likes flow diagrams but has neglected to make a very simple showing in what order things have to be done in order to get the filament to load prior to printing. There was so much waffle in the printing manual that I got confused and did things in the wrong order.

Bests

Chris.
